On Friday February 24th, 2023, the time was finally there: we’re leaving again for a week of winter fun in Alleghe! After the corona misery of the past years our coach was allowed to leave from the EPO site again. This is it, isn’t it, no carrying on with parking and other traffic. Just leave the suitcases next to the bus, use the roof covered parking and say hi to old and new participants. Two full buses this year. Unfortunately without our usual drivers, Arie (under the weather) and Wim (changed jobs). Slightly delayed because of a missing mattress
for the driver we were on our way. Soon after organizer Karel came round with drinks and snacks (bus 1) and Marc (bus 2) as always superbly organized.
Just past Dordrecht a car driver was apparently annoyed by our buses and took it upon himself to try and slow us down to 70 km/hr (where 100 was allowed). We moved to the left lane, he moved to the left lane, we went back to the right lane, he went back to the right. This went on for 5 kilometres and the second driver, who was also seated in the front, filmed everything with his mobile. “You should really call the police about this”, somebody said. “We both work for the police”, answered the drivers, “and we’ve got it on video. We’ll take care
of it on Monday at the office. He’s already got three offences for at least € 400.-: driving in the outside lane unnecessarily, changing lanes without indication and overtaking on a
continuous line.”
No messing with EPO ski!
In the usual restaurant in Moers (Germany) the evening meal was excellent as always. For breakfast we had to change to a different location in Austria, but that also was perfectly good. The remaining journey to Hotel Centrale in Alleghe (Italy) also went without a hitch. Nice that the hotel rooms were immediately available. Unpack, shower and then a beer on the terrace. The weather was lovely. Prices were still very reasonable by Dutch standards.
In spite of little snowfall before the holiday the ski runs were in good condition. The first day perhaps a little icy, but that improved with a little fresh snow. Beginners stayed in Alleghe during the week, but those who wanted more could go to other areas with the bus. Wonderful to explore the ski runs in another area all day. And the day after another area again. Highlight was the night skiing in Zoldo. First a delicious Italian dinner in mountain restaurant “Da Beppi” and then let rip on the freshly prepared ski runs, well lit and with few people.
Leaving after 8 days is always a shame, but even this Karel managed to make into something special. And how! They’re still talking about it in Alleghe. It all started carefully organized: everybody was to be ready outside with their suitcases, the drivers, who were on the parking area outside the village, were called that they could bring the buses round. It was going to be a quick loading with little inconvenience to the local traffic. However…
Just before our two buses arrive an Italian double decker bus stops in the only parking space in front of the hotel. About 70 new guests watch how the driver unloads all the suitcases all by himself and lug them to the hotel. In the meantime our two buses park in the road, so traffic can only pass in one direction.
In no time a considerable queue of oncoming traffic is cheerfully tooting to indicate they want to pass. A sign for Karel to start directing the traffic. He stops the moving cars and beckons the oncoming traffic forwards. They advance till they are hood to hood with the queue Karel had stopped: now no one can move, the chaos is complete and Karel leaves the scene muttering away.
Anyway, our buses were loaded up and we could drive away along the queue that had in the meantime reached the outside of the village. Finally on our way until Karel goes up to the driver in a slight panic: “We have to go back. I’ve left my case with the administration behind.” Karma can be a bitch, Karel! After a phone call the hotel owner was kind enough to bring the suitcase along.
The return journey went smoothly and we’re already looking forward to next year. Hopefully Karel will carry on organizing the EPO ski trip for a few more years. It can’t be better!
He even makes a traffic jam funny!

Civetta ski resort: Rifugio Su'n Paradis - located on the Grava slope. The Su'n Paradis refuge offers delicious sandwiches and snacks, typical desserts and grappas !
Alleghe: The Civetta ski area, with 80 km of slopes, is the largest ski resort in the Veneto region. This area, is lying on the slopes of two giants - Mount Pelmo and Mount Civetta. Small romantic villages nestling in unspoiled scenery surrounded by some of the most beautiful peaks in the Dolomites, like Pelmo, Civetta and the queen of the Dolomites, her Majesty the Marmolada. The Civetta ski resort has preserved the elegance and beauty of these places, connecting the resorts of Alleghe, Selva di Cadore and Val di Zoldo.
SOME REACTIONS:
The photos reflect the 100% feeling of happiness that we had during these luxurious holidays.
Of course, the program was absolutely top class, with as highlights the Bingo evening, the food in an unexpectedly good restaurant high in the mountains and the skiing on perfect snow at Passo San Pellegrino under a 100% blue sky.
But, above and beyond all this, everyone in our family found their own enjoyment. Because the group consisted of all ages Julien and Amelie could easily make new friends. Thanh and I have had lovely chats with Lutz and the Portuguese couple and I myself found the family who own the hotel extremely nice and interesting. Quoc also had a great time.
Once again thank you for this fantastic holiday!

ALLEGHE 2023 - CLUB EPO-SKI WINTERSPORT TRIP
No messing with EPO ski!
Karma can be a bitch Karel!

THE SAN PELLEGRINO PASS
A wide alpine pass, lies at an altitude of 1918m., about 11 km from
Moena, between Trentino and the province of Belluno.
The Marmolada massif is situated in the north of this pass.
The San Pellegrino is surrounded with other passes: Passo Rollo,
Carezza, Sella, Pordoi and Valles,
AND IS ONE OF THE NICEST, VAST AND SUNNY PASSES IN THE DOLOMITES.
In winter it is a modern ski centre. The San Pellegrino Pass belongs to the
TRE VALLI SKI CENTRE, including also the Valles Pass (2031m.) At Pass San Pellegrino you find 64 km of ski runs featuring different difficulty levels, situated between 1900 and 2500m.
A ski tour connects this area to Falcade thanks to the well-known cableway Col Margherita, that offers 100 seats and connects the pass to Col Margherita. On the opposite slope instead, there are several ski runs with different difficulty levels. The SAN PELLEGRINO PASS is located in the "heart"of the Dolomites Skitour,
