Dear
CLUB EPO-SKI fan,
With
pleasure I present to you the CLUB
EPO-SKI coloured brochure giving a snapshot
of how we all enjoyed last winters ski trips.
The
photos were taken during CLUB EPO-SKI trips to Alleghe in February
and Malga
Ciapela in March 2012 both located in the heart of the Italian
Dolomites.
CLUB
EPO-SKI spares no effort to ensure our trips are well organised,
enjoyable and catering to all tastes.

During

Holidays.
There are people who enjoy the anticipation in which the holiday is
seen as an ideal
and by doing so the real holiday can only be a disappointment.
There
are people who enjoy the holiday more afterwards then during. Each
week later they experience the holiday as more and more wonderful.
There
are people who don’t know anticipation and only see the
preparation as a worry and therefore start as late as possible with
packing the suitcases. The author of this report belongs to the
latter group.
For
me the skiing holiday is no more than a change in the daily routine.
A change that sometimes turns out better than expected and sometimes
is disappointing. It is a transition from a sedentary existence with
a promenade with both legs from time to time, to a situation of
constantly being on your feet, alternated with a brief period of
sitting down in a chairlift or on a terrace.
Because
the new situation of this holiday feels to me like real work, my
initial impression is one of a labour camp. But according to the
organizer of the trip, Karel Schuurmans, this is completely
unjustified and it’s only a matter of adjustment.
And,
as always, Karel is right. I’m even starting to enjoy myself.
Even now, in spite of the fact that this year the Bingo is only for
children. But, maybe also because this year the CLUB EPO-SKI SLALOM
is no longer obligatory. You see, this year the distance was so short
that the lesser Gods had finished it before they had even come to
full speed. I’m finished with it before I’ve even
started.
Maybe,
I could also have fitted in the 2nd group of people, who enjoy the holiday more afterwards, if it hadn’t
been for the fact that Karel already asked me during the trip back to
write a report about my experiences with this skiing trip. I’ve
postponed it as long as possible and waited for a euphoric moment,
but alas Karel mustn’t be kept waiting any longer.
And
actually, this text only serves to fill the gaps around Karel’s
photos in the skiing summary, so what am I worrying about. Here then
are my experiences:
Friday, 24 february 2012
At
5.45 pm we leave for Alleghe in a Royal Class Coach. I’ve had
years of experience with a coach like that, it’s just a matter
of sitting it out, but then a little longer than on an EPO working
day.
This
coach is a little longer than in previous years, necessary because of
the growing number of Karel and Mieke’s grandchildren. None
of the drivers want to drive this bus,
because it’s too long for the mountains. But our trusted
driver Arie sacrifices himself. You see, he knows a passage in the
Dolomites that this bus can get through.
Saturday, 25 february 2012
This
time no puncture and no broken rearview mirrors because of driving
accidents. But,
it has
to be said, traffic conditions were ideal and there was no snow on
the roads. Arrival at 11.30 am. A record. We’ve had those
before, but this timeit’s different; now it took less time. Except
for carrying off our own suitcases, we also hauled around all Karel’s
accessories, including two mysterious looking metal cases. As
always, there were also the flowers for the two the Biasio families,
for Teresina and Loris of Hotel Centrale and for the ski-rental
family. After
4 pm we go and collect our skiing material. They still remember us
and ask after the plaster victim from previous years. After all the
sad newspaper reports recently I’m glad to say he’s alive
and living it to the full.

As
is the tradition we stay close by on the first day to acclimatize and
go to the Civetta slopes. Because of all the newspaper reports I have
counted on avalanche danger. But
here in Italy it isn’t too bad and thanks to the snow canons
there is only snow where it’s needed.
Monday, 27 february 2012
Together
with many more enthusiasts we got on the bus with Arie and drove to
Falcade. From there we skied via the Col Margherita (2513 m) to Passo
San Pellegrino twice and back again. Had a lovely lunch in our
familiar restaurant on Le Buse (1885 m). A beautiful day and a
perfectly blue sky.
Tuesday, 28 february 2012
We
drive to a new area for me in our EPO bus. We pass the fashionable
Canazei , where there is a hustle and bustle and next we arrive in
the rather hidden ski- area of Carezza (Karersee). We’re
practically the only people there and while skiing only meet Dutch
people. Further on we see the explanation: a campsite with mostly
Dutch caravans.
Wednesday, 29 february 2012
Nice
weather again. We take the local Dolomiti-skibus to Malga Ciapela
and go up to Marmolada (3345 m) in the gondola. Next we ski the
Sella Ronda. Amongst other places we pass Passo Pordoi, Passo Sella,
Ciampinoi, Dantercepies and Corvara. In
Arabba Eros and I take the Dolomiti-bus ( € 4,50) back to
Alleghe. Our skiing companions of this morning take their time and
prefer a taxi. Noblesse oblige.
Thursday, 1 March 2012
There
is no end to it; again glorious blue skies. Today we ski to Pescul
and from there take the local ski-bus to Passo Giau. In the evening,
during the candle light dinner, Karel comes to our table: Eros
Capostagno and I have been chosen for a “concilio”. The
“council” has to take a decision tomorrow about the
fireworks display. Because of the sun and lack of snow the mayor has
declared the environment a fire risk, which is why fireworks are
forbidden.

And
again the most beautiful weather imaginable. Once again we climb on
board of Arie’s bus and go to Predazzo for the Latemar
Ski-Centre. We make a wonderful trip via Pampeago to Obereggen and
back. In
the evening we can attend the Bingo. This time we can’t
participate, it’s only for the children. Just when , after all
these years, I finally reached the age for it. Afterwards
Karel asks for a “concilio” and asks the council, Eros
and myself, if a decision has been taken with regards to the
fireworks. Karel draws our attention to the up to now mysterious
metal cases in the cellar. Initially Eros objects, but he changes his
mind, because otherwise these crates with their doubtful contents
will have to be taken back to Holland on the bus, with all the risks
that involves. The council therefore makes a positive decision and an
hour later we see a hellish fireworks display being set off at the
edge of the lake. Karel
is elated. The council, who share the responsibility, keeps watching
anxiously. Fortunately
everything goes well. We haven’t been picked up by police and
the forest stayed intact.

The
intention is for us to leave after dinner at 7 pm. So there is still
an opportunity for skiing that day. You can take a shower in the
sauna area. My son and I decide not to take any risk and return the
skis and snowboard. We plan a walk through the Serrai Gorge.
Something we haven’t done before in all these years. The
son of a travel companion also thinks this is a good idea, so the
three of us go to Malga Ciapela on the local ski-bus. After some
searching we finally find the entrance to the gorge. However, we find
it’s been closed because of dangerous conditions, falling
icicles and rocks. In
order not to make our trip there completely wasted we decide to just
enter the gorge for a short distance. But the further we go the icier
the path along the river becomes. We’re
overtaken by another threesome with irons under their shoes. We still
decide to go a little further. In some places even on hands and feet.
But the gorge is truly fabulous. High walls with frozen waterfalls.
Suddenly we hear a wild din and press ourselves against the side of
the gorge in order not to be hit by rocks. It
turns out to be a lone skier, who passes us with loud grating over
the icy path. A
bit further on we see 
a huge frozen waterfall. Two climbers work
their way up with the use of pick axes. From time to time a block of
ice falls down. Apparently humans look for danger. We
carry on and slip and slide for another hour till we arrive at a
statue of the Virgin Mary. Mary seems to have lost her head several
times.” Because of falling rocks”, it says on a sign. But
now she looks as good as new. Maybe a sign to turn back, because
didn’t Arie say: “till Mary it’s not too bad, but
after that it becomes perilous”. The youngsters decide to go
on anyway and I’ll have to go along. Already after about a
hundred metres we reach the end of the gorge, to my great relief.
We
arrive in the village of Sottoguda and find a sundrenched terrace.
Initially we order something small. And because it is so lovely
sitting there and everything tastes so good it ends up in a complete
meal. Also the ice-cream after is perfect.
But
at 5pm we also have to eat in Hotel Centrale. Early this time,
because of our return trip. There we find our freshly showered travel
companions and together with them we put our suitcases in the coach.
CLUB EPO-SKI Everything Perfectly Organised !
Conclusion:
Little
snow this time and only sunshine. Therefore a sort of Gran Canaria
with lots of skiing possibilities. But for me this was the best
ski-holiday ever. So, Karel, same again next year!

Vakanties. Er zijn
mensen die genieten van de voorpret, waarin de vakantie als een
ideaalbeeld wordt gezien, en waardoor de werkelijke vakantie alleen
maar kan tegenvallen.
Er zijn mensen die meer
genieten na de vakantie dan ten tijde daarvan. Iedere week later
wordt de vakantie voor hen mooier ervaren.
En er zijn mensen die
geen voorpret kennen en de voorbereiding alleen als zorgen zien, en
daarom zo laat mogelijk beginnen met het inpakken van de koffers. Tot
deze derde groep hoort de schrijver van dit verslag.
De skivakantie is voor
mij slechts een verandering in het dagelijks ritme. Een verandering
die soms meevalt en soms tegenvalt. Het is een overgang van een
zittend leven met af en toe een promenade op beide benen, naar een
toestand van voortdurend op de benen zijn, afgewisseld met een
kortstondig zitten op een stoeltjeslift of terras.
Omdat de nieuwe
toestand van deze vakantie voor mij als echt werken aanvoelt, is mijn
aanvankelijke indruk, die van een werkkamp. Maar volgens de
organisator van de reis, Karel Schuurmans, is dit volledig onterecht
en is het enkel een kwestie van wennen.
En als altijd heeft
Karel gelijk. Ik begin er zelfs plezier in te krijgen. Zelfs nu,
ondanks dat dit jaar de bingo alleen voor kinderen is. Maar misschien
ook omdat de slalom dit jaar niet langer verplicht is. Hij is dit
jaar namelijk zo kort dat de mindere goden er al klaar meer zijn,
voordat ze op snelheid zijn. En ik ben er al klaar mee voordat ik
eraan begonnen ben.
Ik had misschien ook
wel tot groep 2 van de nagenieters kunnen behoren, als Karel mij niet
al op de terugreis had gevraagd een verslag te maken van mijn
ervaringen met deze skireis. Ik heb het nog zolang mogelijk
uitgesteld en gewacht op een euforisch moment, maar helaas Karel kan
niet nóg langer wachten.
En eigenlijk dient deze
tekst alleen maar als opvulling van de lege plekken rond de foto’s
van Karel in het skioverzicht, waar maak ik me druk om.
Hier zijn dan mijn ervaringen:
Vrijdag, 24 februari 2012
Per
Royal Coach bus reizen we om 17 uur 45 af naar Alleghe. Met zo’n
bus heb ik al jaren ervaring, het is slechts een kwestie van
uitzitten, maar dan iets langer dan op een werkdag van de EPO.
Deze
bus is iets langer dan de voorgaande jaren, nodig vanwege het
toenemende aantal kleinkinderen van Mieke en Karel. Niemand van de
chauffeurs wil deze bus berijden, omdat deze te lang is voor de
bergen. Maar onze vertrouwde chauffeur Arie offert zich op. Hij kent
namelijk een doorgang door de Dolomieten, waar deze bus wel doorheen
kan.
Zaterdag, 25 februari 2012
Deze
keer geen lekke band en geen kapot gereden zijspiegels. Maar de weg
was dan ook ideaal, en zonder sneeuw op de wegen. Aankomst om 11:30
uur. Een recordtijd. Die hebben we wel vaker gehad, maar nu anders,
nu in minder uren.
Behalve met onze eigen koffers, ook gesleept
met alle hulpstukken van Karel, waaronder twee geheimzinnig uitziende
metalen kisten. Ook zijn er, als altijd, de bloemen voor de beide
families di Biasio, voor Teresina en Loris van hotel Centrale en voor
de familie van de skiverhuur.
Na vieren gaan we ons skimateriaal
ophalen. Ze kennen ons nog en vragen hoe het met het gipsslachtoffer
uit voorgaande jaren gaat. Na alle treurige krantenberichten
berichten van de laatste tijd, kan ik gelukkig zeggen, dat hij leeft
en ook nog eens uitbundig.
Zondag, 26 februari 2012
Traditioneel blijven we de eerste skidag in de buurt om te acclimatiseren en gaan we de skipistes van de Civetta op. Door alle berichten in de krant heb ik op lawinegevaar gerekend. Maar dat valt hier in Italië alleszins mee en dankzij de sneeuwkanonnen ligt er alleen sneeuw waar het nodig is.
Maandag, 27 februari 2012
Met
vele andere liefhebbers bij Arie in de bus gestapt en naar Falcade
gereden. Van daaruit tweemaal via de Col Margherita (2513m) naar
Passo San Pellegrino geskied en weer terug. Heerlijk gegeten op het
zonnige terras van het ons bekende restaurant op Le Buse (1885m).
Een prachtige dag met een volledig blauwe lucht.
Dinsdag,
28 februari 2012 Met onze CLUB EPO-SKI
bus rijden we naar een voor mij nieuw gebied. We passeren het
mondaine Canazei, waar het een drukte van belang is, om vervolgens
aan te komen bij een nogal verscholen skigebied, Carezza (Karersee).
We zijn daar bijna de enigen, en we komen al skiënd alleen
Nederlanders tegen. Verderop zien we de verklaring: een camping met
overwegend Nederlandse caravans.
Woensdag, 29 februari 2012
Alweer mooi
weer. We pakken de lokale Dolomiti-skibus naar Malga Ciapela en gaan
van daar met de telecabine de Marmolada (3345m) op. Vervolgens doen
we de Sella Ronda. We passeren onder andere Passo
Pordoi, Passo Sella, Ciampinoi, Dantercepies en Corvara. In
Arabba nemen Eros en ik de Dolomiti-bus (€4,50) terug naar
Alleghe.
Onze skigenoten van deze morgen, nemen hun tijd en
prefereren de taxi. Noblesse oblige.
Donderdag, 1 maart 2012
Het houdt niet op, alweer een stralend blauwe lucht. We skiën vandaag naar Pescul en nemen daar de lokale skibus naar Passo Giau. ’s Avonds tijdens het candle light diner komt Karel naar onze tafel: Eros Capostagno en ik zijn uitverkozen voor een "concilio”. Het "conciliaat" moeten morgen een beslissing nemen over het afsteken van vuurwerk. De burgemeester heeft vanwege de zon en het gebrek aan sneeuw de omgeving brandgevaarlijk verklaard, waardoor vuurwerk verboden is.
Vrijdag, 2 maart 2012
En ook nu weer het
prachtigste weer, dat je je maar kan voorstellen. We klimmen wederom
bij Arie de bus in en gaan naar Predazzo voor het Ski Center Latemar.
We maken daar een schitterende tocht via Pampeago naar Obereggen en
weer terug. ’s Avonds mogen we de bingo bijwonen. Ditmaal staan
we buiten spel, het is alleen voor de kinderen. Net nu ik, naar al
die jaren, er eindelijk de leeftijd voor heb.
Na afloop verzoekt
Karel om een concilio en vraagt het conciliaat, Eros en ik, of er al
een besluit gevallen is ten aanzien van het vuurwerk. Karel wijst ons
op de tot dusver geheimzinnige metalen kisten in de kelder.
Aanvankelijk sputtert Eros tegen, maar omdat die kisten met
bedenkelijke inhoud anders weer met de bus terug naar Nederland
moeten, met het gevaar van dien, verandert hij van mening. Het
conciliaat neemt daarop een positief besluit en een uur later zien we
aan het rand van het meer een hels vuurwerk de lucht ingaan. Karel
is helemaal opgetogen. Het conciliaat, dat medeverantwoordelijk is,
blijft in spanning toekijken. Gelukkig loopt alles goed af, we zijn
niet door de politie meegenomen en het bos is in takt gebleven.
Zaterdag, 3 maart 2012
Het is de bedoeling dat
we ’s avonds na het eten om 7 uur vetrekken. Dus is er nog
gelegenheid om die dag te skiën. Douchen is mogelijk in de
saunaruimte. Zoon en ik besluiten om geen risico te nemen en we
brengen de ski’s en het snowboard terug. We plannen een
wandeling door de Serai-kloof. Iets dat we in al die jaren nog nooit
eerder hebben gedaan.
Een zoon van een
reisgenoot vindt dat ook een goed idee. Wij gaan daarom met ons
drieën met de plaatselijke skibus naar Malga Ciapela. Na enig
zoeken vinden we uiteindelijk de ingang van de kloof. Hij blijkt
echter te zijn afgesloten vanwege gevaarlijke omstandigheden,
vallende ijspegels en stenen. Om niet onze weg
daarheen helemaal tevergeefs te laten zijn, besluiten we dan maar een
klein eindje de kloof in te gaan. Maar hoe verder we gaan, hoe meer
het pad langs het riviertje verijsd is. We worden ingehaald door een
ander drietal met ijzers onder hun schoenen.
We besluiten toch nog
iets verder te gaan. Op sommige plekken zelfs op handen en voeten.
Maar de kloof is werkelijk schitterend. Hoge wanden met bevroren
watervallen. Plotseling horen we een wild geraas en drukken we ons
tegen de kloofwand om niet door stenen te worden geraakt. Het blijkt
een eenzame skiër, die ons luid schrapend over het ijzige pad
passeert. Nog even verder zien we een heel grote bevroren waterval.
Twee klimmers banen zich daar met pikhouwelen een weg naar boven. Af
en toe valt er een blok ijs naar beneden. Blijkbaar zoekt de mens
gevaar. We gaan verder en glijden zo nog een uur door tot dat we
aankomen bij een Mariabeeld. Maria blijkt al verscheidene malen haar
hoofd te hebben verloren. Door vallend gesteente, staat er op een
bord. Maar nu staat ze er weer als nieuw bij.

Misschien een teken om terug te keren, want had Arie niet gezegd: “tot Maria is het nog te doen, maar daarna is het levensgevaarlijk”. De jeugd besluit toch door te gaan, en ik moet dan wel mee. Na zo’n honderd meter bereiken we al, tot mijn grote opluchting, het einde van de kloof. We komen aan in het dorpje Sottogudo en vinden daar een zonovergoten terras. We bestellen daar aanvankelijk iets kleins. En omdat we daar zo heerlijk zitten en alles ons zo lekker smaakt, loopt het uit op een complete maaltijd. Ook het ijs toe is perfect. Maar om vijf uur moeten we ook eten in hotel Centrale. Vroeg dit keer, vanwege onze terugreis. Daar vind- en we onze fris gedouchte reisgenoten en zetten we samen met hen onze koffers bij de bus.

Conclusie:
Weinig sneeuw dit keer en alleen maar zon. Derhalve een soort Gran
Canaria met skimogelijkheden. Maar voor mij was dit de beste
skivakantie ooit. Dus
Karel, volgend jaar (in 2013) weer !

THE SAN PELLEGRINO PASS
a
wide alpine pass, lies at an altitude of 1918m., about 11 km from
Moena, between Trentino and the province of Belluno. The Marmolada massif is situated in the north of this pass. The San
Pellegrino is surrounded with other passes: Passo Rollo, Carezza,
Sella, Pordoi and Valles, AND
IS ONE OF THE NICEST, VAST AND SUNNY PASSES IN THE DOLOMITES. In
winter it is a modern ski centre. The San Pellegrino Pass belongs to
the TRE
VALLI SKI CENTRE, including also the Valles Pass (2031m.) At Pass San
Pellegrino you find 64 km of ski runs featuring different difficulty
levels, situated between 1900 and 2500m. A
ski tour connects this area to Falcade thanks to the well-known
cableway Col Margherita, that offers 100 seats and connects the pass
to Col Margherita. On the opposite slope instead, there are several
ski runs with different difficulty levels. The
SAN PELLEGRINO PASS is located in the "heart"of the
Dolomites Skitour, the

PASSO
DI COSTALUNGA
The
original name of the Karerpass is Carezza, which is derived from the
German dialect word "KAR" and does mean "KEY".
The pass road itself from Bolzano down to Val di Fassa into a village
named Vigo is around 40 km long with the shorter piece down from the
summit to Vigo di fassa, which is just 8,5 kilometers. The
pass summit itself is covered with meadows and some light evergreen
woods and is located between the Latermar Mountain group and the end
of the Latemar Catinaccio. From
the pass summit you have a panoramic round view by nearly 360gr over
to the Ortler mountain, to the Cevedale massif and the Adige Valley.

SKIING IN VAL DI FIEMME - PREDAZZO & OBEREGGEN
Val di
Fiemme is an extensive resort set among stunning natural
beauty awe-inspiring Dolomites. There are 150 kms of well groomed ski
pistes at Val di Fiemme, serviced by 51 lifts offering an uplift
capacity of 72.000 skiers per hour. The resort has a top elevation of
2.145 m and a vertical descent of 1.415 m. The
runs here are suitable for all levels, with 40% of slopes for
beginners, 40% for intermediates and 20%
for advanced skiers. There is also the possibility of night skiing.
The Italian ski resort of LATEMAR is part of the Val di Fiemme Ski
Area with access to 76 individal pistes.

You can retrace the lift facilities
and cable cars used, altitudes reached and kilometres of slopes

sports enthousiasts will be able to check their own ski performance
and create their personal profile. This is how it works: decide the
Login, insert the numerical code in the ski-performance (on the front
side of the skipass). You will get altitudes reached, kilometres of
slopes covered as well as the map with the routes covered.
