Dear
CLUB EPO-SKI fan,
With
pleasure I present to you the CLUB
EPO-SKI coloured brochure giving a snapshot
of how we all enjoyed last winters ski trips.
The
photos were taken during CLUB EPO-SKI trips to Alleghe in February
and Malga
Ciapela in March 2012 both located in the heart of the Italian
Dolomites.
CLUB
EPO-SKI spares no effort to ensure our trips are well organised,
enjoyable and catering to all tastes.
Look
through our brochure and be convinced.
During
CLUB EPO-SKI trips you have the possibility to ski and sightsee in
various famous and international ski resorts in the Dolomites. Our
locations are chosen with great care in the heart of the DOLOMITI
SUPERSKI, which can be easily reached from the hotel. Not
to forget the CIVETTA and MARMOLADA ski resort where we are based
for more than 17 years, itself offers a host
of ski possibilities. More
than enough for a whole week ! An
extra plus is that all categories (from beginner to advanced) will
find something to their liking.
It goes
without saying we will be returning in the coming wintersport season
2012/2013.
I hope you all enjoy the brochure.

***** DOLOMITI SUPERSKI *****
THE WINTER SPORT PARADISE FOR
EVERYBODY
A CLUB EPO-SKI trip to MALGA CIAPELA, ITALY Friday 9 March - Sunday 18 March 2012
BY ROD ALLEN
Introduction
Karel
Schuurmans, the EPO-SKI chairman, tells me he has been organizing the
EPO-SKI visits to the Dolomites in Italy for 30 years. From my
records we have been going with him since 2003. This was our 6th trip
with Karel and his wife Mieke tot the Dolomites, previously always to
Hotel Centrale*** in Alleghe, although we have visited Malga Ciapela
several times to make the trip up the mighty Marmolada massif and to
walk through the nearby gorge (I Serrai di Sottoguda) to see the
icefalls and the attendant climbers.
The
Alleghe trip takes place in the Krokus Vakantie and therefore is
aimed at family groups. The Malga Ciapela
trip takes place 2 weeks later and is more aimed at non-family groups
and hence has an older clientele. Demographically
our group was mainly Dutch, with three German, one American and one
English participant.
The
Journey Out
Personally I am not fond of the journey to the snow.
Whatever method you choose to travel I find it a pain. We've done it
all: coach / plane / train and self-drive. The EPO method was by
coach, which is very easy on the traveller but takes a while and
involves sleeping overnight on the bus. We find this better than the
hassle of driving / flying etc. And there,s no luggage constraints.
We
gathered for a 17.30 Friday departure from the EPO, dropping off our
luggage at the coach loading point and parking our car in the EPO
car-park. A de-luxe touring coach was employed for a total of
24-people approx., so there was plenty of room and, with reclining
seats and foot-rests, quite comfortable. Extra leg-room is available
on request for extra tall passengers.
It
is always a good feeling as the coach eases into the evening rush (=
crush) hour traffic with a glass (or two) of Prosecco, provided by
Karel, to sit back and relax and let someone else take the travel
strain.
Every
reasonable provision for your comfort was available, with tea,
coffee, beer and soft drinks on board, a mini-toilet for emergency
use and frequent stops to water the horse and stretch your legs.
After the Prosecco Karel came round with complimentary wine as we
travelled in the direction of the German border. A stop was made at
20.00 at vd Valk near Moers, just into Germany , for a buffet dinner
(included in the holiday price, wine
gratis). A
movie (the 2009 version of the kidnapping of Freddie Heineken with
Dutch soundtrack) was shown after dinner as the bus went further. At 07.00 Saturdaymorning) just before the Brenner
Pass between Austria and Italy, we stopped at the hotel Stolz*** in
Mühlbachl (Austria) for breakfast.
Resuming
the drive the coach left the motorway just north of Bolzano in Italy
for a spectacular drive through the Italian Dolomites in brilliant
sunshine. We arrived early in Malga Ciapela
at approx. 11:00 on Saturday, 10th of March, a total journey of 17
hours or so for the 1250 kms.
Arie
and Ernst were our friendly intrepid
drivers, Arie having being involved for a number of years now. The
coach and the 2 drivers stayed with us for the duration of the
holiday to provide for day trips to other ski areas in the Dolomites.
They were very much part of the group and were fully integrated into
the social side of things.
Tips for
the traveler:
1. Take
an inflatable neck cushion for comfort and sleeping. An additional
small cushion for your
back can be useful. 2. The
bus is warm but for sleeping a thin fleece blanket is handy. I
used mine as an arm-rest ! 3. For
sleeping an eye-cover helps. We also took ear-plugs but didn,t use
them. 4.
Some small refreshments are to be recommended: a bottle of mineral
water, Pringles and travel sweets were in our "hand-luggage". 5. Ipod /
reading matter.
Hotel Roy*** - Malga Ciapela
Hotel Roy
is a good 3 star hotel set on a sunny plateau next to the road from
Alleghe, 16 km from Malga Ciapela. Opposite the hotel is the final
stop on the Dolomiti Ski-Bus which runs between Alleghe and Malga
Ciapela. The view westerly from the hotel is dominated by the east
face of Marmolada, one of the most spectacular peaks in the
Dolomites. The southern view is no less attractive (Mount Alto
Auta). A small pair of binoculars is recommended for relaxing on your
balcony, preferable with a glass of wine.
We
arrived at 11:00 on Saturday, too early for
the hotel, which was still busy with cleaning the rooms. We were told
by the owner / manager Alessandro that we would have room 36 (I had
specifically asked for a room with a view and upstairs) on the second
floor but it would take 2 hours. We therefore took lunch in the
downstairs café. When we went back to claim our room we found
there had been "a mistake", we now had room 44, right at
the top of the hotel, with the same southerly view but it was not yet
ready (in fact not even started). Seeing
our obvious distress, tired and already suffering my usual problems
with the first day at altitude: Hotel Roy - Malga Ciapela is approx
1500 metres altitude) Alessandro gave us room 26, on the first floor.
We never saw room 36 but both rooms 44 and 26 were both comfortable
and well appointed and we settled in no. 26 gladly. Please note
Karel, next year please let's have room 36 as a must.
This
was the only adverse point concerning the hotel which otherwise was
friendly and well run with good facilities, comfortable with: a
lounge, somewhat sparse bar and very pleasant dining room. The bar
was run by a very friendly Sani. Small meals and snacks were
available in the café mentioned earlier.
In
comparison to the hotel Centrale in Alleghe, Hotel Roy was better
appointed but maybe the food wasn,t quite so tasty although others
preferred it. Not a lot in it in other words. I found I had to leave
something of most plates to avoid exploding.
Breakfast was nominally 08:00 to 10:00 but mostly was
finished at 09:00. Since we liked to take breakfast at approx. 08:45
it was essential not to accept shortages but to ask the friendly
staff for whatever was missing.
It was a
five minute walk downhill to the village of Malga Ciapela, where
modest shops for ski-hire and equipment, supermarket and souvenirs
are to be found. Due to the height difference (80 metres, about one
in five or six) I found it worth the wait for the ski-bus to return
to the hotel. Bus frequency was in general every 20 minutes except
for late afternoon.
The
hotel was equipped with a wellness centre with sauna and whirlpool.
Gowns and towels were available but modest users may want to have
their swimsuit packed.
English
was not very widely spoken, German being the most useful second
language, a link with the regions' history as part of the
Austro-Hungarian empire.
Karel
had the whole place eating out of his hand and would organize, sort
out whatever problems people had, enjoyed the
effort and his own holiday. In addition he is one of the friendliest
people you can meet. The perfect man for the job and he did a perfect
job.
Drinks
at the hotel are very reasonably priced. Our bar and restaurant bill
including 2 shared lunches, for 2 people for a week was € 180,--
We did not practice any constraint or
over-indulgence.
On
the last day (Saturday) the rooms had to be vacated by 10:00 before
going skiing or whatever else you had in mind. Provision was made to
store luggage etc. in the Stube and very usefully on the bus for the
return trip. Limited facilities were available to shower and change
after skiing. Alternatively we went to Sottoguda for shopping and we
went up the cable car to the Marmolada peak (for the 3rd time) before
returning to Malga Ciapela for the last shopping (the ham / speck is
worth taking home) and then to the hotel for the farewell dinner
which was provided at 17:30 in the downstairs café.
Equipment
Hire
Skis, etc.
can be hired at Malga Ciapela, 5 minutes walk downhill ! Skis and
sticks cost € 10, per day. Hirers might like to consider that a
reasonable pair of carving skis with bindings and sticks are
available at Kiwi sports in Alleghe for € 199,00 Three
weeks hire is more expensive than this so if you intend to come again
this is a good option especially on this
trip with bus transportation.
Skiing
- General
Although
not empty, the ski area was not crowded, with mainly very small if
non-existant lift waiting times. The traveling distance seems to be
too far for the northern Europeans and many of the skiers were from
the east European areas as well as Italian's enjoying Italy.
Even
though our skiing ambitions were limited we still took the Super
Dolomiti Ski Pass which covered the buses,
and any skiing in the Dolomiti Superski area including the Marmolada
/ Arabba / Civetta regions of interest to us. Folks who don't want
this pass get a discount.
The
weather in this region had recently been very sunny (as it was for
the week) and the pistes reflected the effects of the sun. The slopes
below 1500m were artificially kept open to provide access. Much of
the natural snow below this level had long since disappeared. The
slopes from 2000 down to 1500 were likely to be heavy and slushy
(except the North facing slopes) after 11:00 am and became crowded as
skiers from above were funneled into the main ways down.
A good
strategy was to do your skiing above 2000m and take the chairlift /
gondolas down. Unfortunately this was not possible from Passo Fedaia
down to Malga Ciapela.
Skiing - Marmolada - Malga Ciapela
The ski facilities start at the bus stop with a drag lift literally 25 metres from the hotel. This lift feeds the chair lift up to Passo Padon (2369m), with runs back down to the hotel via Passo Fedaia (2057m) and on to the main Marmolada cable car valley station. Passo Padon also provided connections to the Arabba system and to the lower half of the Marmolada system (chairlift up at Passo Fedaia). The Hotel Roy access also provided a short ski down to the main cable car which, in 3 sections, takes you to the top of Marmolada (3343m), worth it for the spectacular views (see photos). The main Marmolada run starts from the highest point (3250 metres) and ends again at the cable car start 12kms below. This run passes the hotels access point to the skiing.
Skiing - Alleghe - Civetta
A
25 minute bus ride connects Malga Ciapela to Alleghe, the main access
point to the Civetta region. Much
improvement has been invested in the new Gondola from Piani di Pezzè
to Col dei Baldi and in the area around Piani di Pezzè.
The
Dolomites are drop dead gorgeous and the Civetta region is no
exception. The center of activity is at Col dei Baldi from whence 3
main ski-areas emanate: Alleghe (8 lifts), Selva di Cadore (6 lifts)
and Palafavera / Valzoldana ( 12 lifts). This gives a total of 26
lifts serving 80 kms of piste , 65 kms of which can be covered by
snow cannons. The standard was roughly 50%
blue and 50% red runs. Our favourite was the run down from Col dei
Baldi to Pescul, returning on the chair lifts to Fertazza. The
restaurant there was the best we found and the views over Mount
Civetta and Mount Pelmo outstanding. Take your camera and binoculars.
The
Fertazza ski runs down on the first section had brilliant skiing
since they are north facing and the snow was in good condition,
softening up only after midday. Skiing back from Fertazza involves
descending to the valley below Col dei Baldi and the snow on this
run was very heavy going and not at all enjoyable. Col dei
Baldi back to Piani di Pezzè (for the final gondola down to
Alleghe) was soft on top but lower down where the sun has only
limited access the snow was still crisp and enjoyable.
Skiing - Bus Trips
The
bus was retained during the stay in Italy and was used for making day
trips to other ski regions up to one hour drive away. We were too
lazy to get up early for the 08:30 start so did not experience any
of these trips. They were however highly enjoyed by the good skiers.
The not so good skiers still enjoyed these trips by
limiting their skiing to higher slopes in good condition and then
finding a comfortable sunny terrace before returning on the gondola /
chairlift.
Shopping
Shopping
was restricted to the few shops in Malga Ciapela, to more extensive
facilities in Alleghe (look for the slippers in the Co-op), and to
Sottoguda, well worth a visit for the metal artwork festooned over
the village. There is also a wood working shop for "real
souvenirs". Look for the shop with the enormous troll outside
(see photos)
Walking
Walking
is catered for by walking down the river valley. It is possible to
make it from the Hotel Roy down to Alleghe,
16 km away. The first section is through the Gorge (I Serrai di
Sottoguda), a fabulous short walk from
Hotel Roy to Sottoguda. The gorge is
approximately 150 metres deep and has a number of icefalls (frozen
waterfalls, see photo), much beloved if ice climbers. This year the
gorge was officially closed due to the warm conditions making rock
and ice falls onto the path through the gorge quite common. Many
walkers, like us, did make it with caution. Walking the 3 km up the
gorge (Sottoguda to Malga Ciapela) is easier since you don't fall
over so much but was much harder on the lungs since it was uphill.
The walk down was easier on my lungs but was very slippery. Even with
proper walking boots I fell over twice. Many walkers used their ski
sticks for support. The telescopic walking sticks used for serious
hiking are to be recommended. Once out of the gorge going down you
find yourself in the old part of Sottoguda, a very photogenic area.
There is also a superb "Hotel Montanara"for a wonderful
lunch sitting outside in the sunshine. Watch out for the quite common
local deer ! After visiting the shops lower down (see above) walkers
can then get the Dolomiti Ski Bus back to Malga Ciapela.
We also
made a more demanding walk from Rocca Pietore to Alleghe (9km) along
the mainly flat track alongside the river. We got off the ski bus at
Rocca Pietore and spent the next 3 hours walking. The views across
the lake to Alleghe were particularly attractive.
Apres-Ski Activities
Many
people enjoyed meeting at 16:30 - 17:30 for an end of the day-out
drink with story swapping of the day's activities. Others liked to
relax in the wellness centre or on their balcony. The
evening Apres-Ski for most of us was a
coffee and a drink or two with a chat after dinner. We didn't leave
the hotel to explore other possibilities so cannot give further
information.
Certain
activities were planned by karel in the evening:
- a
candlelit gala dinner -
the CLUB EPO-SKI slalom did not take place this year, the majority of
skiers prefered
anextra out in the bus. -
the Firework Display did not receive the approval of the local
authorities on the grounds of too
much dry flammable material exposed by the sunny weather. -
The fireworks are stored at the Hotel Roy*** in anticipation of next
year.
The Trip Back to Holland
We packed our cases in the morning and stored them and our other luggage on the bus prior to the 10:00 deadline. We then went on our last days' holiday fun. We had the final dinner at 17:30 and boarded our bus at 19:30 hours Saturday for the trip back to Holland. As usual I slept a lot better on the return journey. We stopped in Moers once more for the buffet breakfast at approx. 08:00. After the stop we finished the last leg back to Holland arriving at Rijswijk at approx. 11:30 hours Sunday lunchtime.
CLUB EPO-SKI Holidays
Karel
organizes CLUB EPO-SKI holidays for the crocus holiday (Den Haag
dates) and two weeks later to Malga Ciapela. These trips are all
available, at very reasonable prices by contacting Karel Schuurmans.
He is now retired from the EPO but still plans to organize EPO-ski
trips for the foreseeable future.
You
do not have to be a member of the European Patent Office to join one
of his trips. You do
have to join the CLUB EPO-SKI (€ 14,00 per adult, € 7,00
per child per year).
If you are
interested in joining the EPO-SKI CLUB on one or more of their trips
Karel is waiting to hear from you. He
can be contacted at: info@eposki.com or
see the clubs website: www.eposki.com
Conclusions
The value
for money here is superb. The journey, transportation, dinners and
breakfasts, a
good 3 star hotel. delicious food, the Super Dolomiti 7 Day Ski Pass
are all included for a basis price of 1000 per adult. Our total
budget, including the above and the hotel restaurant / bar bill was
around € 2500 for 2 adults.
We
had a great time, skiing and walking in breathtaking scenery, in
superb weather, the CLUB EPO-SKI group are very friendly . Thanks
Karel for everything.

A CLUB EPO- SKI TRIP TO MALGA CIAPELA, Hotel Roy***
vrijdag 9 maart - zondag 18 maart 2012 VERSLAG: ROD ALLEN
Introductie
Karel
Voorheen
limieten.
We
wijn terwijl we richting Duitse grens reisden.
Italiaanse Dolomieten in schitterend, zonnig weer. We
Hotel Roy - Malga Ciapela
Hotel
We
We
gingen daarom in het beneden gelegen café lunchen. Toen we
beschikbaar.
Engels
Onze eindrekening
geïnvesteerd in
Onze
goed was.
plaatselijke herten ziet!
We
We
We
adembenemende omgeving, in prachtig weer. De EPO-SKI groep is erg
vriendelijk en we hebben het heerlijk gehad. Karel, dank je wel voor
alles.

Review of the trip to Malga Ciapela - The Dolomites - Italy Friday 9 March - Sunday 18 March 2012 by Klaus Ludwig
For Marietta and myself, I can only say that we really enjoyed this trip very much. To put in a nutshell: The Malga Ciapela has been an excellent value for money deal with nice company and is worth to be repeated. My congratulations and respect to you Karel for the organisation throughout the entire trip. The coach ride was a major concern for me, which was completely removed by Karel providing so much space for each passenger, which you can only get in the KLM business class on a 747. The service however was much better than with KLM. I still wonder how Karel can do all this, he was our tour guide, purser, entertainer and even responsible for all the beautiful pictures to be taken. (ps We are looking forward to receive a copy of those nice photos you took) I have no idea where you got all that energy from to serve drinks even after a full day of skiing.

The
stop over places on the ride in and out were very well selected and
very good. Arriving in the Dolomities in
the morning in beautiful sunshine with such a nice scenery was just
breathtaking and was the perfect start for the week of skiing. Having
the bus available all week for trips to other ski areas, which were
so well selected by Karel, allows to made an excellent use of the
super Dolomiti ski pass. The skiing off course was the main purpose
and
the best part of this trip. I never had a ski holiday, where the
closest ski-lift was just opposite the road, only 20 meters away. Not
even in France. The group I joined for the skiing was just what I was
looking for. A very nice group, all excellent skiers. I especially enjoyed the coffee brakes and of course the extra runs I
did with Karel, while the others needed a break.
As
Rod already said, EPO stands for " Everything Perfectly
Organised". I fully agree with this. Looking
already forward to the trip next year.
Thanks
very much Klaus
& Marietta Ludwig
Organised”. Ik ben het daar volkomen mee eens. We kijken al uit
naar de reis van volgend jaar.
Heel
hartelijk dank. Klaus
en Mariëtta.
