Een tiendaagse ski safari reis naar Oostenrijk De wintersportreis van vrijdag 6 maart tot zondag 15 maart 2020 werd er één om niet snel te vergeten. Niet zozeer door de inhoud van de reis hoewel die ook een onvergetelijke indruk heeft gemaakt, maar juist door alle randverschijnselen er om heen ten gevolge van de Coronacrisis. Om te beginnen werd de voorgenomen reis naar Malga Ciapela in de mooie Dolomieten van maart 2020 afgezegd en werd een andere bestemming gekozen.

A 10 day ski safari trip to Austria

The winter sport trip of Friday, March 6th to Sunday March 15th became a very memorable one. Not so much because of the content of the trip, although that also made an unforgettable impression, but actually because of all the peripheral phenomenon surrounding it as a result of the Corona crisis.
For a start the intended trip in March 2020 to Malga Ciapela in the beautiful Dolomites was cancelled and a new destination was chosen.

Een tiendaagse ski safari reis naar Oostenrijk.

De wintersportreis van vrijdag 6 maart tot zondag 15 maart 2020 werd er één om niet snel te vergeten. Niet zozeer door de inhoud van de reis hoewel die ook een onvergetelijke indruk heeft gemaakt, maar juist door alle randverschijnselen er om heen ten gevolge van de Coronacrisis. Om te beginnen werd de voorgenomen reis naar Malga Ciapela in de mooie Dolomieten van maart 2020 afgezegd en werd een andere bestemming gekozen.

Een paar dagen namelijk voor de afreis werd Noord–Italië ten gevolge van de Corona uitbraak door Buitenlandse zaken van geel naar oranje verklaard. Dit hield in alleen noodzakelijke reizen. Dus geen vakanties. Hoewel een advies en geen absoluut verbod toch niet iets om zomaar te negeren. Temeer omdat afreizen wellicht consequenties zou hebben na terugkomst (mogelijk veertien dagen in quarantaine zeker voor de mensen die nog werkzaam waren). Ondanks dat niet iedereen er gelijk over dacht was uiteraard de enige verstandige beslissing de reis naar Italië te annuleren. Maar Karel laat zich niet snel uit het veld slaan en in zeer korte tijd (hulde) slaagde hij er in een andere bestemming te vinden in een op dat moment nog als groen (dus geen bijzondere veiligheidsrisico’s) gekarakteriseerd Oostenrijk. Het werd Hotel Stolz in Mühlbach/ Matrei am Brenner. Voor de doorgewinterde EPO ski reizigers geen onbekende plek omdat daar op de heenreis richting Italië vaak het ontbijt wordt genuttigd. Hotel Stolz had een voldoende aantal kamers vrij zodat het gezelschap van 15 man (en vrouw) daar kon neerstrijken. Later bleek dat de Corona epidemie veel mensen had afgeschrikt en wij het tweede deel van de week de enige bewoners van het hotel waren.

Deze corona epidemie was wel de rode draad gedurende de gehele reis. Ik kom daar later nog meer op terug. Toch even goed om nog eens vast te stellen wat corona nu eigenlijk is. Volgens de van Daele is : Corona=(de ̴; -‘s) Buitenste atmosfeer van de zon, als een lichtkrans waarneembaar bij zonsverduistering. Dus feitelijk totaal iets anders dan een virus. Uit de definitie volgt dat je een verduistering nodig hebt om de schoonheid van de corona te
kunnen waarnemen. Feitelijk gebeurde op deze reis het zelfde. Verblind door het verlangen naar de Dolomieten is jarenlang door Oostenrijk gereden zonder de schoonheid van de aldaar aanwezige skigebieden te kunnen beoordelen. Nu Italië ineens verduisterd was bleek dat Oostenrijk prachtige skigebieden heeft. Om met de grote voetbal filosoof Johan Cruijff te spreken, elk nadeel heb zijn voordeel.

Op vrijdag 6 maart reden we op de afgesproken tijd richting Oostenrijk. In een klein maar select gezelschap . Voor de verdere beschrijving is het wellicht goed het gezelschap onder te verdelen in de groep oudere jongeren (OJ’s) en de groep jongere ouderen.(JO’s). Zonder verder namen toe te delen omdat iedereen wel weet (of denkt te weten) tot welke groep hij of zij behoorde. Deze twee groepen hadden zo hun eigen ritme dat met name bij het skiën duidelijk geëtaleerd werd.

Traditioneel was onze chauffeur gedurende de hele week Arie, die zich weer op een voorbeeldige wijze van zijn taak heeft gekweten. Het diner op de heenreis werd genuttigd in Hotel van der Valk in Moers ( Duitsland )

 

 

Keurig op tijd arriveerden we na de nachtelijke rit in Oostenrijk voor het ontbijt en het inchecken. Na het ontbijt zijn de OJ’s naar Steinach gebracht door de hoteleigenaar voor (voor enkelen) het huren van ski’s maar ook om die gelijk onder te binden en de eerste afdalingen te gaan maken op de Bergeralm. De JO’s zagen dit nog niet zitten en hebben zich ook in Steinach laten afzetten om daarna een rustige wandeling terug naar het hotel te maken.

Dat er niet enkel een coronavirus actief was bleek bij het aanschaffen van de skipassen. Het computersysteem gaf geen krimp (virus?) waardoor het in eerste aanleg onmogelijk was een weekpas te kopen. Deze kon pas na twee dagen worden aangeschaft. We hebben zoals gebruikelijk meerdere skigebieden aan gedaan, eerst Kühtai, mooi gebied maar wel wat druk. Mede doordat het zondag was en het weer stralend. Vervolgens hebben we Schlick 2000, Axamer Lizum (twee maal), de Stubaier Gletscher, Hoch-Oetz en de laatste dag Bergeralm in Steinach onveilig gemaakt. Alle mooie gebieden.

Ruime pistes met voor elke smaak afdalingen. Met name Axamer Lizum met de Olympia afdaling (olympische spelen Innsbruck 1976) en de Bergeralm konden op veel waardering rekenen. Deels denk ik ook omdat het weer toen prima was met voldoende zicht en goed geprepareerde pistes. Na aankomst met de bus in een skigebied voltrok zich al snel de scheiding tussen de OJ’s en de JO’s. De OJ’s waren al op pad richting skiliften als de JO’s nog bezig waren hun schoenen aan te trekken. Ach je bent jong en je wilt wat. Daar staat tegenover dat de JO´s aan het eind van de ski dag vaak al als eersten in de bus zaten en een drankje genoten terwijl de OJ´s nog een laatste run deden. Hoch-Oetz werd ook enkel door de OJ’s bezocht omdat de JO’s , kijkend naar het weer besloten om naar Innsbruck af te reizen. Achteraf bleek dat het weer op Hoch-Oetz prima was maar het bezoek aan Innsbruck was ook niet te versmaden. Met name de dames zagen de kans schoon om wat inkopen te doen.

Het skiën is gelukkig voor iedereen goed verlopen, er is slechts een drietal kleine incidenten te melden. Om privacy redenen kunnen de namen van de betrokkenen niet worden vrijgegeven. Ik reken op het begrip van een ieder hiervoor. Vandaar een geanonimiseerde weergave van de incidenten. Een deelnemer slaagde er in niet om bij het instappen in de stoeltjeslift goed te gaan zitten en gleed omlaag om net voor een lager gelegen stroompje in de diepe sneeuw tot stilstand te komen. Gelukkig op tijd omdat anders een val van ca 2 meter in het water en op de keien het gevolg was geweest. Een ander veronderstelde in een berghut een bankje waar dat niet aanwezig was en kwam daardoor hard met de grond in aanraking. Een derde wist de tocht met de sleeplift (T-bar, kapstoklift) niet tot een goed einde te brengen en moest halverwege af haken. Behalve wat gekrenkte ego’s waren er gelukkig geen blessures.

Dat de keuze voor Oostenrijk juist was bleek gedurende de week toen op 8 maart het reisadvies voor Italië werd aangescherpt naar rood voor grote delen van Italië. Tevens voerde Oostenrijk strenge grenscontroles in waardoor reizen over de Brenner lastig werd en in ieder geval zeer veel vertraging zou geven. Goed dat we niet in Italië zaten. Echter in Oostenrijk zelf veranderde er ook het nodige. Vrijdag 13 maart werd afgekondigd dat de Oostenrijkse skigebieden vanaf zondag 15 maart zouden worden gesloten. Dit gold ook voor alle hotels, restaurants en andere horeca gelegenheden in de skigebieden. Oostenrijk werd van een groen gebied ineens oranje. Wat dat betreft waren we nog net op tijd. Maar ook Duitsland ging op zondag 15 maart de grens controles met Oostenrijk aanscherpen. Gelukkig reden we zoals gepland op zaterdagavond weg en hebben we geen problemen ondervonden. De terugreis verliep voorspoedig en na een ontbijt in Moers waren we mooi op tijd bij het EPO kantoor.

Kortom, al met al een memorabele reis. Mooie gebieden, over het algemeen goede sneeuw en goed weer. Een aangenaam gezelschap en de reis perfect georganiseerd door Karel. Prettig hotel met goed eten. En altijd een interessant gespreksonderwerp, corona, en hoe daar landelijk en mondiaal op werd ingespeeld

Er is maar één minpuntje te vermelden. Slechts op één piste was er een bombardino te verkrijgen waarvan de deelnemers vonden dat deze wel erg klein was.

Austria, a 10 day ski safari trip to Austria

The winter sport trip of Friday, March 6th to Sunday March 15th became a very memorable one. Not so much because of the content of the trip, although that also made an unforgettable impression, but actually because of all the peripheral phenomenon surrounding it as a result of the Corona crisis..
For a start the intended trip in March 2020 to Malga Ciapela in the beautiful Dolomites was cancelled and a new destination was chosen.

As it happened, a few days before departure, the ministry of Foreign Affairs had increased Northern Italy’s status from danger zone yellow to danger zone orange because of the Corona outbreak. This meant only strictly necessary travel should take place. So no holidays. Although this was an advice and not an absolute ban it wasn’t something you could simply ignore. Also because going there might have consequences for the return, possibly a 14 day quarantine, certainly for the people still in work.
Although not everybody felt the same way, obviously the only sensible thing to do was to cancel the trip to Italy.
But Karel isn’t easily put out and in a very short time span (well done!) he managed to find another destination in Austria, which at that moment was still indicated as green, so no special safety risks. It was to be Hotel Stolz in Mühlbachl / Matrei am Brenner. For the experienced EPO skier not an unfamiliar destination, because we often had breakfast there on the journey into Italy. Hotel Stolz had enough rooms available so that the party of 15 people could settle down there. Later it turned out that the Corona epidemic had frightened off a lot of people and in the second half of the week we were the only guests in the hotel.

The Corona epidemic was in fact the common factor during the whole trip. I’ll come back to that later. It may not be a bad idea to determine exactly what corona is. According to van Daele (dictionary) corona is: (de ~,-“s) Outermost layer of the sun, visible as an illuminated circle during a solar eclipse.

So actually something totally different from a virus. From the definition it follows that you need darkness to perceive the beauty of the corona. In actual fact the same thing happened during this trip. Blinded by the longing to be in the Dolomites we have been driving through Austria for years without being able to appreciate the local ski areas there. Now that Italy was suddenly in darkness it turned out that Austria has beautiful ski areas. To quote the great Football philosopher Johan Cruijff: elk nadeel heb zijn voordeel. (Every disadvantage has its advantage )

On Friday, March 6th we departed at the agreed time in the direction of Austria. In a small but select group. For further description it might be good to split the group into Older Youths (OY’s) and Younger Oldies (YO’s).

Without further mentioning names, because everybody knows (or think they know) which group they belonged to. These two groups had their own rhythm, which particularly during skiing was clearly displayed.

Traditionally our driver for the week was Arie, who as usual fulfilled his task in an exemplary way. Dinner on the way there was at Hotel van der Valk in Moers, Germany.

Nicely on time we arrived in Austria after the overnight trip for breakfast and check-in. After breakfast the OY’s were taken to Steinach by the hotel owner for hiring skis (for a few), but also to immediately use them for the first descents on the Bergeralm. The YO’s didn’t fancy this yet and were also taken to Steinach from where they took a gentle walk back to the hotel.

It became clear there wasn’t only a corona problem in play when we tried to buy our ski passes. The computer system was down (virus?) , which initially made it impossible to buy a week-pass. We could only buy those 2 days later.
As usual we visited several ski areas. First Kuhtai, beautiful area but rather busy, also because it was a Sunday and the weather was glorious. Next we descended on Schlick 2000, Axamar Lizum (twice), the Stubaier Glacier, Hoch-Oetz and on the last day Bergeralm in Steinach am Brenner. All beautiful areas.

Spacious runs with descents for all tastes. Particularly Axamer Lizum with the Olympia run (Olympic Games Innsbruck 1976) and the Bergeralm were very much appreciated. Partially, I think, because the weather was lovely when we were there with good visibility and very well prepared runs. Pretty soon after arrival by bus in a ski area a separation between the OY’s and the YO’s took place. The OY’s were already on their way to the ski lifts while the YO’S were still busy putting on their boots . Oh well, “je bent jong en je wilt wat” (you’re young and you want something).
On the other hand at the end of the ski day it was often the YO’s who were in the bus first, enjoying a drink while the OY’s were still doing their last run. Hoch-Oetz was only visited by the OY’s because the YO’s, looking at the weather, decided to go to Innsbruck instead.

With hindsight the weather at HochOetz turned out to be fine, but a visit to Innsbruck was also not to be sneezed at. Particularly the ladies took the chance for some shopping.

Fortunately the skiing went well for everyone. There were only 3 small incidents. For privacy reasons the persons concerned can’t be named. I count on understanding from all of you. Therefore a nameless recount of the incidents.
One participant didn’t manage to sit down properly in the chair lift, slid down and came to a halt in the deep snow just before a stream a bit lower down. Fortunately just in time, because otherwise a fall of about 2 meters into the water and onto the boulders would have been the result.
Someone else presumed there to be a bench in a mountain hut which wasn’t actually there and thereby collided heavily with the floor.
A third person didn’t manage to complete the trip on the tow-bar very well and had to abandon it half way.
Except for some dented egos, luckily there were no injuries.

That the choice for Austria had been correct was proven half way through the week when on March 8th the travel advice for Italy was increased to code red for large parts of Italy. Also Austria introduced strict border controls whereby travelling over the Brenner became difficult and would in any case at least have caused long delays. A good thing we weren’t in Italy. However, in Austria also quite a bit changed.
On Friday, March 13th they announced the closure of the Austrian ski areas from Sunday March 15th. This also applied to all the hotels, restaurants and other hospitality businesses in the ski areas. From one moment to the next Austria was rated from a green area to an orange one
. In that respect we were just in time. But Germany was also going to tighten border controls with Austria from Sunday, March 15th.
Fortunately we left for the return journey on Saturday evening and we experienced no problems. The return journey went without a hick-up and after breakfast in Moers we arrived nicely on time at the EPO office.

All in all a memorable trip. Beautiful areas, mostly good snow and good weather. Pleasant company and the trip perfectly organized by Karel. Nice hotel with good food. And always an interesting topic of conversation, Corona, and how this was dealt with on a national as well as a world-wide level.

There’s only one minus point to be mentioned. On one run only you could get a Bombardino which the participants felt was really too small.

Bergeralm ski resort - 1.048 - 2.231 m. Thanks to the high-snow-safety, the slopes of the ski resort Bergeralm are for use from the beginning of November to the end of April. 30 km of perfectly groomed slopes extend across an altitude from 1,000 to 2.200 m, catering for all levels of abilities. The slopes are distinguished with the Tyrolean "Piste Quality Seal" and provide the ideal terrain for beginners through to ambitious racers.

With the gondola lift of the Bergeralm lift you can easily reach the middle station at 1.600m, from where you have a fantastic view of the mountains which dominate the Wipptal Valey connecting Austria and Italy.
The Nösslachjoch:
From the highest point of the ski area at the Nösslachjoch you will find several black and red slopes.
A little further down, under the the gondola lift, runs the dreaded "ManniPranger". This slope is one of the steepest, groomed slopes in Austria and is known for the Tyrolean world slalom 2009.
The slope has a slope of 102% and is a challenge even for real professionals.
Bergeralm is a very challenging ski resort - So, excellent for one day of skiing !

Some ski areas are special. Not because they are huge, or because they have extreme descents and super fast lifts, but because the atmosphere is just right. Or because there are very nice descents to be found. The small SCHLICK 2000 ski area in Fulpmes ( Stubaital ) is just such a ski area. With 22 kilometersof piste, it looks like a small ski area with only a few1lifts. But when you get there, the ski area feels a lot bigger. Especially the very varied slopes make a visit to this ski area absolutely worthwhile.

Hotel - Restaurant SCHLICKERALM 1616 m.

Sommige skigebieden zijn bijzonder. Niet omdat ze reusachtig groot zijn, of omdat ze extreme afdalingen en supersnelle liften hebben, maar omdat de sfeer er gewoon goed is. Of omdat er wel heel leuke afdalingen te vinden zijn. Het kleine skigebied SCHLICK 2000 in Fulpmes ( Stubaital ) is precies zo'n skigebied. Met 22 pistekilometers lijkt het op papier een klein ski- gebied met slechts een paar liften. Maar wanneer we er zijn, voelt het skigebied een stuk groter aan. Vooral de zeer afwisselende pistes maken een bezoek aan dit skigebied absoluut de moeite waard.   At first sight a small ski area with 1 gondola, 3 chair lifts and a handful of drag lifts. These few ski lifts are very cleverly constructed. There are many different slopes available and there are 4 or 5 different variants available for some runs. Op het oog een klein ski gebied met 1 gondel, drie stoeltjesliften en een handvol sleepliften. Deze paar liften zijn wel heel slim aangelegd. Er zijn namelijk heel veel verschillende pistes beschikbaar. Van sommige afdalingen zijn wel 4 of 5 verschillende varianten beschikbaar.

Schlick 2000 is a medium -sized ski resort in the Stubai Valley in the Austrian Tyrol and This resort can be accessed from the village of Fulpmes. Its pistes stretch all the way up to 2.140 metres above sea level and the top of the Kreuzjoch ridge. Schlick 2000 is blessed with excellent snow cover from November until April. Despite its compact design, it is the largest ski resort in the Stubai Valley and offers pistes catering for all skiing and snowboarding abilities., including three black runs, a snowpark, a track- your-day system that records the pistes and lifts used.

'Pisten Polizei'

THE BÄRENHÜTTE also called PLEISENHÜTTE The Bärenhütte, also called Pleisenhütte, is a traditional ski hut located in the ski resort Axamer Lizum in Tyrol. Since 1979 the Bärenhütte is managed by the Freisinger Family, who put great emphasis on face-to-face contact to all people from near and far. The high quality of the traditional dishes offered and appropriate pricing are the great strenghts of this hut. At the Bärenhütte you come as a customer and you leave as a friend !

Bombardino/Heisse Oma

De bombardino is een warme Italiaanse wintercocktail met eierlikeur. Andere bestandsdelen zijn koffie en rum of brandy. Dit geheel samen vormt een calorierijk drankje die binnenkomt als een bom! Heisse Oma is de Duitse naam voor dit warme gele drankje.

Hochoetz: It is a very nice ski area with slopes of all levels of difficulty. All slopes have the quality mark "Tyroler Pistengütesiegel" and snowboarding is also very enjoyable here. The height of the area varies from 1400 to 2300 meters. So, we ski partly above the tree line. The ski area has mainly easy slopes (blue and red).

Hoch-Oetz werd ook enkel door de OJ’s bezocht omdat de JO’s , kijkend naar het weer besloten om naar Innsbruck af te reizen. Achteraf bleek dat het weer op Hoch-Oetz prima was maar het bezoek aan Innsbruck was ook niet te versmaden. Met name de dames zagen de kans schoon om wat inkopen te doen.

Hoch- Oetz was only visited by the OY’s because the YO’s, looking at the weather, decided to go to Innsbruck instead. With hindsight the weather at HochOetz turned out to be fine, but a visit to Innsbruck was also not to be sneezed at. Particularly the ladies took the chance for some shopping.

Travelling on the CLUB EPO-SKI ROYAL CLASS BUS is anything but a punishment !!! This is because we always travel on large Royal Class buses with plenty of room. During the outward and return journeys, drinks and tasty snacks, candies, etc. are freely available. ! ......EVEN MORE LUXURIOUS THAN A FIRST CLASS FLIGHT TICKET !!!

It was a fantastic week, with sufficient snow, not freezing cold and mainly sunny, moreover a very good ambiance and last but not least, nobody had to be transported to the hospital. Thank you all for participating a CLUB EPO-SKI wintersport trip and remain in good health, because next year we will go again !
