"Sneeuw, blauwe hemel, drank en seks"

Malga Ciapela

Malga Ciaplela

Malga Ciapela

Malga Ciaplela

On the Sunday evening ( 6 March ) a cocktail is provided,

Maandag 7 maart 2016:

We vermaken ons opperbest.

Conclusies:

he original name is Carezza ( 1745 m. ), which derives from the German dialect term "KAR" , or rather bowl, to indicate a concave shape between the mountains. It is about 8 km from Vigo di Fassa and extends over a wide field-like ridge set between the slopes of the Latemar Group and the far ends of the Catinaccio group of mountains. The pass enjoys a very beautiful panoramic perspective and a favourable position facing the sun. Ski lifts, some of which are especially suitable for beginners, and many walks of varying difficulty leave from Carezza.

Malga Ciapela, Friday 4th – Sunday 13th March 2016

"Snow, blue skies, drink and sex"Malga Ciapela"Yes, we'll be going hell for leather again this year", says Karel Schuurmans, the organizer and initiator of the EPO Ski Club since 34 years.

I've let myself be persuaded by the organizer to come along again. "Last year went well, didn't it, in spite of the artrose", Karel reminds me. "If you just went for a walk, the views are too beautiful to miss ."
He's right about that. However, I did do a test run beforehand in Snowworld. The first time a little tentatively, but after that everything went better. As a member of the Dutch Ski Association and if you are 65+ you get a very decent reduction there. Then, unexpectedly, a message from one of my sons. He would like to leave Dublin for a bit to join me in the winter sports. I'm very happy to exchange my single room. The number of single rooms is limited and there is a waiting list for the many single travelers in our tour group.

Friday, March 4th, 2016

The place of departure is a sad sight. Demolition, half of the Hinge has been pulled down. Batistelli has wreaked havoc.

Pasteur's royal-coach is waiting, the seats have been allocated to avoid any possible problems. The drivers, Willem and Peter, are old acquaintances. Willem will stay with us for the whole week.
He saved us two years ago from a pass which had been blocked by another coach by driving backwards for 1½ kilometers. He also had to manage a number of hair pin bends in reverse. So, we are in good hands!
Everyone has arrived and we leave at the appointed time. First to Moers (Germany) for the buffet dinner, which we really enjoyed. Then back in the coach with two more short stops on the way.
It's raining incessantly that night. Eventually we reach Austria early in the morning where Karel has arranged breakfast for us in "Hotel Stolz" in Matrei am Brenner. We enter Italy over the Brenner Pass. After the Alps we get to the Dolomites. The rain has changed to snow. A difference from last year, when it was relatively warm and there was no snow to be seen here. In Bolzano we drop off driver Peter who will travel back home by train the next day. 32
We carry on into the mountains. It's snowing so heavily now that snow chains are necessary. Willem parks the bus on the side of the road, puts on his rain suit and gloves and then cheerfully gets into the cold to fit them. Once they're in place we continue, but having arrived at the Passo Fedaia we find that it's been closed. We have to go back in order to reach our destination via a huge detour, the Passo san Pellegrino.

After numerous hair pin bends we eventually reach "Hotel Roy" at about 2.15 pm. The advantage of this late arrival is that all the rooms are available so we can freshen up straight away.
The hotel is in Malga Ciapela, which is situated at the foot of Marmolada near a beautiful gorge, the Serai di Sottoguda". "Malga" means mountain meadow, but I haven't been able to ascertain the meaning of "Ciapela".

Arrival Hotel Roy*** - Malga Ciapela March 2016

First we have to hire skis. We prefer the service of the De Biasio family, whom we know well. Therefore my son and I take the local bus to Alleghe. But we'd like to have something to eat and drink there first. But then we meet Ann and Marc in the village who tell us that the last bus to Malga Ciapela leaves at 5pm. Oh well, no food then and we hurry over to our ski hire where the De Biasio family greets us most warmly. With our skis, board and shoes we hurry to the bus stop, where we arrive just in time for the last bus.

That evening, at 7.30pm, we enjoy a well- deserved dinner in the "Hotel Roy". Five tables have been reserved for our group. The staff asks us to keep to the same places throughout the week, because of the menu choice, which we have to fill in in advance. There is a choice of 3 starters, 3 main courses and 3 desserts. Fixed table arrangements are not ideal, but during the coffee after in the lounge, there is an opportunity to exchange ideas with other people in the party.

Table 1: The organizers Karel and Mieke, space engineer Klaus (Estec), retired Grand Major Ina, the burn-up-the-slopes snowboarder Joop (70+), Jan-Carel and his father Ronald.

Table 2: Monique and Marinus (enthusiastic golfers, respectively handicap 9 and 14), Jacqueline and Jan and the teachers Piet and Rob. This group of 6 is an enthusiastic team that have been making ski -trips together for years.

Table 3: Sandra and Ron (Ron often peddles across the water to get to the EPO), fireworks assistant Marc De Groen with table- and ski companions Maarten, Ann and Gerben (Gerben doesn't peddle, he pendles (commutes) to and from EPO in his Porsche.)

Table 4: Our driver Willem with the Groeneweg family: father Ron, Nienke and Sebastiaan (this year without moustache and beard), Janneke and Jamie (long ago he was the example for our young snowboarders; then as a counter- culture statement with a pony tail, but now a well- groomed offshore manager.)

Table 5: Jeanne-Marie and Byron (ex- rugby player) and the Kaspers family: Ivo with Ellen and Mark.

The day starts well; there is a blue sky and we go to Alleghe by local bus to try out the skis in the Civetta area. Up the hill in the "eggs". With all the snow covered trees it looks beautiful, like a picture postcard. When we arrive at the Col dei Baldi we find that part of the runs have been closed due to excessive snowfall. That leaves only one route and we join Mieke and Klaus in the direction of Pescul.
In the course of the afternoon the sky clouds over even more and it starts to snow. We go back to Alleghe where we enjoy a couple of glasses of delicious local wine (Amarone and Barolo) in the "Enoteca" wine bar.

We have to get up early today and leave at 08.45am with ten other people and our Royal Coach to the Passo san Pellegrino. Having arrived there we go up with the cable car to the Col Margherita (2513m).
We arrive in a fabulous ski area. Initially it's cloudy, but later the sun comes out. We leave the Col Margherita area via a black run to go to a ski area on the other side of the road. Mieke knows a restaurant there which serves delicious pizzas. They do indeed taste scrumptious.

Afterwards we do a few more runs and then we (Mieke, Klaus, Ina, J-C and I) have a Bombardino (a local drink on an advocaat, rum/grappa and double cream base) at the bottom of the cable car to finish off our ski day, while we wait for the return of the others.
Marc, Ann, Gerben and Maarten want to make use of the last lifts. Once everyone is back on the coach Karel, like an accomplished waiter, serves us some aperitifs.
Karel is still totally fit, because he hasn't been able to ski and thereby saved his strength. It's his knee that's the trouble. During his stay in Alleghe two weeks ago, he also couldn't go on the ski slopes at all. Despite all that he stays cheerful and says there is a beautiful walking area here that he discovered with Willem. "Something for you, Ronald, next year". "I'll bear it in mind", I tell him.

It snowed heavily last night. We were to go to Predazzo with our coach, but the passes haven't been cleared yet and the ski runs from Marmolada and Arabba are closed. Got up early for nothing. As the only alternative we take the local bus to Alleghe. This year this service is not free. But the cost is not at all bad; through "Hotel Roy" a week pass is only € 8.-

Having arrived in the Civetta area it turns out that part of the ski runs there have been closed too. Therefore the remaining runs are busier than normal. It snows a little and there is some weak sunshine.

Wednesday, March 9th, 2016

Up early again to go to Predazzo (near the ski jumping slopes of Latemar). The shorter route via the Passo Fedaia is still not possible and we have to make a detour via the Passo san Pellegrino.

malga

A number of people in the group find that takes too long and get off earlier, at Arabba. We carry on till Latemar and go up in the "eggs". It's cloudy there with some weak sunshine from time to time.
We ski via Pampeago to the other side: Obereggen. On the way back we want to have lunch, but it takes a while before we find a restaurant with places available.
Once back in Predazzo we have a Bombardino and then we get on the coach to pick up the rest of the group at the Passo san Pellegrino. Before dinner a quick visit to the whirlpool and sauna in the hope that that will ease the muscle ache a little. We have to be patient, because some noisy Russians in the whirlpool don't seem to be in any hurry and we have not got the nerve to disturb the naked Russian beauty. Thursday,

On opening the shutters of our room we see a clear blue sky. At last! But the Passo Fedaia and the Passo Giau are still closed.
At 09.30am we leave for the Carezza ski area (Karer See) with Willem in the driver's seat and Karel next to him. The sun keeps on shining with only a cloud here and there. Karel skies with us, but has to give up earlier. Too much trouble with his knee after all. We go on, but the long awaited sunshine also has its negative side, because in the afternoon the snow is somewhat mushy.
We ski down two more black runs and then get on the coach back home, that is to say " Hotel Roy***".

In the evening, after dinner, we dress up warm for a torchlight procession through the Sottoguda gorge. A specially designated bus takes us there. Entrance fee is €5,- including a torch.

Getting them lit turns out not to be so easy and causes some delay. The walk over the snow- clad path is beautiful and the light of the torches on the frozen waterfalls is magical. Towards the end we pass a cave with a statue of the Virgin Mary and a little further on we have to return our torches.
Two volunteers are quite busy extinguishing them in a washtub.
At the exit they've made a square. Several fires in holes in the snow create the lighting. Over another fire there is a cooking pot with glühwine for the participants. They've even thought about music. We're having a great time. After a few glühwines we get back on the bus that will take us back to the hotel.

Friday, March 11th, 2016

At 09.00am we ski from our hotel via part of the Sella Ronda to Santa Cristina. It's overcast and there is some weak sunshine. In the Santa Cristina (Val Gardena) area it's clearly more luxurious than at Marmolada and Civetta. We have coffee in the super trendy "Hotel Sella" at 11.00am. Even the toilets there have been architect designed. One of the toilets has indeed been very artistically styled (see photo). We have lunch at the foot of the Sassolungo (Langkofel) that afternoon.

Somewhere in Santa Cristina Willem is waiting for us with his coach. My son and I want to do a few more runs. Unfortunately, in doing so, we ski too far on and have to walk back up through the snow for half an hour. I'm lucky in that my son doesn't only carry his own board, but also my skis. Exhausted I get on the coach which is waiting next to restaurant Jägerheim. Unfortunately there is no time for a drink there.

The Passo Fedaia has finally been opened, which makes the return trip to our hotel, an extremely pretty route by the way, considerably shorter.

That night, after a copious dinner once again, the moment of the great fireworks has arrived, the moment Karel has been looking forward to so much. With Marc as his assistant we see one rocket after another go up into the sky. We utter shrieks of admiration. Fortunately there are no avalanches and Marc didn't get any scorch marks. All's well that ends well.

The last day of skiing. Mieke, Karel, Klaus, J-C and I decide not to go skiing. To finish off with, we want to go and enjoy the view from a terrace on the top of Marmolada but after we've been queueing for 30 minutes for the gondola, we decide this is taking too long and we leave the queue to take a walk through the gorge instead and have a cappuccino with "Apfelstrudel" in Sottoguda.
This turns out to be a good decision, because they taste really good. J-C and I take the shortest route back, which means back through the gorge again, because we have to get back to Malga Ciapela first to pick up our ski things in order to take them back to Alleghe.

We agreed with the others we'd go and have something to eat and drink in the "Enoteca" in Alleghe. But that turns out not to be so easy. You see, during lunch time there is no local bus service between Malga Ciapela and Alleghe which delays us considerably. We still manage to catch up with Karel, Mieke and Klaus in the Enoteca to raise a glass with them before they leave. We stay on and enjoy delicious snacks and good wine. After that, on the way to the local bus to Malga, we first drop in on Teresina and Loris from "Hotel Centrale". We have spent our winter sports holidays there for many years in a row. We exchange all the family news and they won't let us pay for our espressos.Malga

At 5pm there is "the Last Supper" in Hotel Roy. We hear from the skiers in our group that the visibility on the slopes had been abominable that day. So much so, that Ina lost her way and had to be taken back onto the right track by a local.

At 7pm everything has been loaded onto the coach and we can leave. Fortunately the Passo Fedaia is open and in good condition. We first go to Bolzano to pick up driver Peter. We have a few more stops along the way and then try to get some sleep.

Sunday, March 13th, 2016

Slept well, until I was woken up in the morning: 07.30am breakfast in Moers. The rest of the journey was also uneventful and we were at the EPO terrain as early as 10.30am.

It was a wonderful week without any appreciable problems. Didn't experience any horrible, spectacular things. The coach didn't get stuck on a pass. Dangerous reversing manoeuvres were therefore not necessary. We also didn't lose any snow chains and fortunately nobody ended up in hospital.

The disadvantage of this however, is that it doesn't do much for the level of interest of this travel report.
That's why Karel came up with the idea to pimp up the title with "drink and sex." In the conclusions beneath I'll give this some more attention.
