REVIEW OF THE TRIP TO MALGA CIAPELA
FRIDAY 6 MARCH ô SUNDAY 15 MARCH 2015

Report by Paul Anghel

Beginning of March is an exciting time for the EPO Ski Club since it is the time when the ski trip to Malga Chapel takes place. Karel Schuurmans who has been organising this trip for about 33 years now does not forget to further build up everybody's excitement by sending to all participants information about the weather and snow reports.

This year, like every other year, the trip started with an overnight bus journey from Rijswijk to Malga Ciapela. Although I took the bus in the previous years and I knew that traveling by coach in this particular case is quite conformable, this year I traded the bus for a plane. I did not forget to send my luggage with the bus, which made flying even more enjoyable. I took advantage of KLM's direct service to Venice. From Venice I took a relatively short ride in a local bus to rejoin the group in Malga Ciapela.

Malga Chapela is the hub for all the skiing adventure of the group. The word adventure may not apply to a run of the mill ski vacation spent in a single resort where the only option is to ski the same slopes over and over. I consider the Dolomites to be a true adventure not only because it has 1200km of slopes and around 450 lifts but mostly because the ski areas are interconnected, and one can ski hundreds of kilometres without taking the same slope more than twice.

What makes the skiing experience even more enjoyable is that everything is very well organised. Karel takes care of everything: not only the transportation, the lodging (with half-board), and the ski pass, but also daily bus excursions to places that cannot be easily reached on skis. The bus that makes the trip from the Netherlands to Italy stays with the group, and it is put to good use almost on a daily basis. Of course, people join the daily bus trips if they want. If one is not in the mood for a road trip in one of the days, he or she can ski the area around the hotel.

Last but not least, I am impressed with the people in our group always showing kindness and willingness to help and understand others. One particular story is the perfect illustration of how Karel and the other people react to difficult situations. In one of the days, a group of three skiers, including myself, decided to return to the hotel on skis from an area about 2 hours away from Malga Ciapela. We miscalculated the time needed get to Malga, and could not make the last ski lift in time. We found ourselves stranded on the wrong side of the mountain. Karel with the agreement of the others decided to take the bus on a 45-minute detour from the normal route in order to come to our aid. Such an attitude is truly commendable.

My trip started with a flight to Venice, and as expected, ended with a flight back from Venice. Before flying back, I could not resist spending one day in Venice. Venice is such an amazing city and the perfect way to end an equally amazing ski vacation.

VERSLAG van de wintersportreis naar MALGA CIAPELA

Vrijdag 6 maart - Zondag 15 maart 2015

Malga Ciapela|
Heerlijke Italiaanse drankjes: grappa's !

Malga Ciapela

Mijn schoondochter Laura vliegt me voorbij.

Zondag 15 maart.

The Passo San Pellegrino:

A wide alpine pass, lies at an altitude of 1918 m., about 11 km from Moena, between Trentino and the province of Belluno. The Marmolada massif is situated in the north of this pass. The San Pellegrino is surrounded with other passes: Passo Rolle, Carezza, Sella, Pordoi and Valles - is one of the nicest, vast and sunny passes in the Dolomites.
In winter it is a modern ski centre. The San Pellegrino Pass belongs to the Tre Valli Ski Centre, including also the Valles Pass ( 2031 m. ) At Pass San Pellegrino you find 64km of ski runs featuring different difficulty levels, situated between 1900 and 2500 m. A ski tour connects this area to Falcade thanks to the well-known cableway Col Margherita, that offers 100 seats and connects the pass to Col Margherita.
On the opposite slope instead, there are several ski runs with different difficulty levels. The San Pellegrino Pass is located in the "heart" of the Dolomites Skitour, the skitour "dell'Amore"

Passo di Costalunga - Passo Carezza

The original name is Carezza ( 1745 m. ), which derives from the German dialect term "KAR", or rather bowl, to indicate a concave shape between the mountains. It is about 8 km from Vigo di Fassa and extends over a wide field-like ridge set between the slopes of the Latemar Group and the far ends of the Catinaccio group of mountains. The pass enjoys a very beautiful panoramic perspective and a favourable position facing the sun. Ski lifts, some of which are especially suitable for beginners, and many walks of varying difficulty leave from Carezza.

SKI WITH CLUB EPO-SKI FOR THE BEST IN QUALITY, SERVICE, VALUE and CHOICE !!!

Translation of Ronald de Groot's report for Malga Ciapela 2015 by Marja Allen.

MALGA CIAPELA, March, Friday 6th ô Sunday 15th , 2015

I wasn't going to go skiing anymore, too old and worn out. Pity though, that from now on the beautiful views of snow-covered mountain tops from a terrace on the ski-slopes are over. Admirable that people like Princess Beatrix and Karel Schuurmans, just to mention some random people, are still to be found on skis.

Then none of my sons mails me: "Dad, are you going again? My girlfriend and I would like to come along." The sons have been holidaying with the EPO ski club for many years and have have always had a very good time.
First a consultation with the physiotherapist : "Should be possible." Then I approached Karel Schuurmans, the founder and organizer for the past 33 years.
The week we always go in, the one to Alleghe, is fully booked, but a fortnight later there are places in Malga Ciapela. That turns out to suit us as well, so we enter our names. We know Malga Ciapela, it's situated at the foot of Mount Marmolada near a beautiful gorge, the Sottoguda, at half an hour's drive from Alleghe.

But with my painful back and knees I keep thinking it's a bit risky. And on top of that it is the week which has Friday the 13th in it. You never know. It's 40 years ago since I first went on a winter sports holiday and broke a leg on that occasion, but I,ll remember it forever.

FRIDAY, MARCH 6th. 2015

The time has come. We're on the EPO-terrain and greet all our old acquaintances. My son is happy, because friends from years ago, Dirk and Wouter, are also there. Just "grown a bit bigger."
They're are going skiing with their father ( Rob ). Unfortunately, our wives have pulled out and haven't been going on winter sports holidays for years.
Credit to the ladies ( Mieke, Jacqueline and Monique ) who still participate after all these years.
Pasteur's Royal Coach arrives on time, the seats have been allocated to avoid any potential Problems. I.m lucky, because this time I have two seats instead of the ¾ - seat of last year.

The drivers are old acquaintances, Wim and Gijs. Wim will stay wit hus all week. He rescued Us last year from a blocked mountain pass by driving backwards for 1 ½ kilometers, where he also had to negotiate a number of hairpin bends by looking in his rearview mirror. So, we are in safe hands.
Everybody is on time and we leave for Moers ( Germany ) for the dinner buffet. After that, Another two short stops during the night and we reach Austria, where Karel has booked us breakfast in "Hotel Stolz" in Matrei-am-Brenner.
Then we drive into Italy via the Brenner Pass. Via the alps we reach the Dolomites. No snow to be seen yet, but we're not worried, because after all these years we know that the skiing is always good at our destination.
Even the Passo Fedaio is open, which saves sus a big de-tour. This pass is infamous, because on one occasion we got stuck there for two hours.

SATURDAY, MARCH 7th. 2015

After many hairpin bends we arrive in "Hotel Roy" in Malga Ciapela on Saturday at about 13.00 hrs. The hotel is bigger and more luxurious than "Hotel Centrale" in Alleghe, where we previously stayed. A few diehards go skiing straight away. But we are cautious and we've carefully read the warnings in Karel's book. So, first we acclimatize and choose a "gezellig"outdoor café for the purpose. In their enthusiasm, or is it perhaps mental acclimatization problems, diehards Martin and Marc have missed the last lift in the Civetta area. That costs them é 80,-- for a taxi.

SUNDAY, MARCH 8th 2015

It is a real SUNday, that is to say: sun-drenched. Some of us go skiing in the Marmolada area and others in the Civetta area in Alleghe. A group with Mieke and Karel think big and do the whole Sella Ronda straight away. Still, Karel and Mieke are in top form, because they were also here two weeks earlier.

Malga Ciapela

MONDAY, MARCH 9th 2015

Today we're going with 10 other people to the Passo Pellegrino in our Royal Coach Bus. There we ski in the beautiful area of the Col Margherita. It's rather overcast, which means I can't see contrasts any more with my dark sunglasses.
Fortunately one of Mieke's snowglasses brings light in the darkness. And also later Mieke will prove to be an angel of salvation. But more about that later in this report.

TUESDAY, MARCH 10th 2015

Now that the Passo Fedaio is in a good condition for driving, the Santa Cristina ski region is also an option. It's situated at the opposite end of the Sella Ronda. A ski resort that's very popular with the Dutch.
We go there and it turns out to be a good choice: the area is beautiful and there is plenty of sunshine.

Malga Ciapela

Malga Ciapela
Klaus & Mieke

After a strenuous ski tour we have a well-earned lunch. Because going round the many bends in The road with the coach is too much for some, they decide to ski back to the hotel.
Karel reckons that time-wise that should be possible.
We however ski some more in the Santa Cristina area and take the bus back.

Another group (four men under the guidance of Jacqueline and Monique ) has skied directly from Malga Ciapela and are waiting for us at the bus to go back together.
Then we get a phone call that part of the group that was to ski back to the hotel has missed the last lift and got stuck in Arabba. It's Martin and Paul. Would we please make a detour to pick them up.
The EPO Ski-Club service extends to such a degree that this is agreed. It's quite a detour, but we're rewarded with views of imposing rock formations and vertical mountain sides. This is the area og the Passo Sella and the Passo Pordoi.

The mood on board is excellent, partially because of the alcohol. All sorts of reproaches, that we can bombard the stranded men in Arabba with later on, are being cooked up. But eventually it's not that bad, because the guilty looks on the two men's faces make us forgive everything. One and a half hours later we arrive at our hotel, where we barely have time to freshen up for dinner.

Semi cloudy. With the regular scheduled service bus ( free for guests of our hotel ) we drive from Hotel Roy to Alleghe and from there we're going up in "the eggs ". From Col dei Baldi we ski to Pescul in order to go to Lagazuoi, with another public transport bus, for the ski tour of the Grande Guerra.

Between Lagazuoi and Arabba there are many flat areas which is hard work on skis. "Next time we'll do this without me", utters a heavily perspiring Karel. I ask him if he means this is his last trip, but that's a step too far for him.
At one part of the route we get some relief: a sleigh pulled by 2 horses pulls us along, together with a whole string of other skiers ( 50 x é 2,- per trip, I hear someone calculate ). After Arabba we take the gondola up Marmolada from where we ski back over an endless series of "bückels". Once back we're offered a "vin brulé"by the hotel owner. And after a copious dinner we are served another drink in "the Stube " by EPO Ski Club. Life is good !
Because of my anxious foreboding which I already had since before our departure, I executed the daily routine of calling the home front. Fortunately I can report that everyone returned in one piece.

THURSDAY, MARCH 12th 2015

The night is turbulent, because there is a gale blowing outside. Because part of our group fears that this will continue during the day they want to stay close to home.
But we leave with our "front seaters ". Wim in the driver's seat and Karel next to hi mto the ski area of Carezza ( Kare See area).
Having arrived there our president, after yesterday's torture, decides to go skiing by himself. "To take pictures" he says. His wife Mieke therefore takes charge and we follow. The first ski lift goes over a snow-covered golf course, which reminds golfer Klaus of ESA-Estec, that he has three golf matches in the following week. He tells us he wants to take it easy, because he wants to remain capable of lowering his handecap to 14.
Mieke knows the area well and goes very fast over an icy, long and narrow forest path with many blind curves. Klaus turns out to be less careful than he intended and follows Mieke closely. It's too fast for me and the distance between me and them is growing all the time. Fortunately they are waiting for me at the end by the lift.
Then it's time for coffee and after several more beautiful runs we have lunch in a restaurant on The Moseralm.

We have nearly finished our lunch when our president turns up. There is little time for him To have a bite and he's disappointed he has to settle for a tosti before we carry on together. After yesterday's set-back our president has plenty to say for himself again and wants to "really go for it ". So much so that, when we have a "Bombardino "after a black run to finish the afternoon, he and Paul want to go on a bit longer.
Because of this they unfortunately miss the last lift. Paul, previouly confronted with this problem, Expects that Mieke will have to be called so that the bus can pick them up somewhere, in order to avoid an expensive taxi ride.
However, he is luckier this time, because Karel exudes so much authority that the lift is restarted, just for them.
Because of this they still mangage, albeit quite a bit later than agreed, to reach our bus. the passengers are, without exception, in a very good mood. Or has our critical judgement been Impaired by the copious amounts of booze our president serves us with?
Who will tell?
But at that moment we really don't care. It's been a glorious day and the anticipated storm did not materialize.
Back at the hotel after another sumptuous dinner, there is a torchlight procession through the Sottaguda gorge. Transport by bus there and back is included, but the torches have to be paid for separately.
It turns out tob e a marvelous and impressive walk between high mountain sides and frozen waterfalls.
That evening I called the home front again to tell everybody was still completely intact. But the week isn't over yet and tomorrow is Friday the 13th.

FRIDAY, MARCH 13th.

We go to the ski area of Predazzo ô Obereggen in our bus. At the Latemar ski jumps we go Up in "the eggs". I remember from a previous trip that half way on the route to Obereggen an ambulance was waiting at Pampeago.
But now the weather is beautiful and snow conditions are perfect. So I am worrying for nothing. Here we all go down the slope. My daughter -in-law Laura flies past me. That's youth for you, but I take it more slowly and fin dit fast enough.
A little while later I vaguely see that someone has made a belly landing next to the ski run. "Not Laura", it goes through my mind, and I brake with all my might to take a look. And yes, it is her.
In no time at all the whole group gather around her. Martin, a qualified ski teacher, goes down to warn the lift personnel. Within 10 minutes two snow scooters with 5 men, as well as "a Banana" arrive.
Fortunately Laura can still move everything and she is very carefully turned over and put on the banana. Then she's very cautiously skied to the ambulance, which is indeed, as I mentioned earlier, waiting in Pampeago.
Son Florian accompanies the mto the hospital in Cavalese and Martin takes care of the abandoned skis and the snowboard.

I skied a bit less in the afternoon and took a breather on a terrace after all the consternation. Then we go back and find an old acquaintance at the bus. "Our Arie" turns out to have been dug up again to be our second driver.
A warm reunion follows.
In the evening Karel, assisted by Marc, treats us to a grand fireworks display. After that, but not before we have another nightcap, Mieke is kind enough to help clear Laura and Florian's room and pack their bags.

SATURDAY, MARCH 14th 2015

The last skiing day, but I'm not taking part to exclude any further risk and take my skis back to the rental place. We have dinner at 5 pm. It's snowing, let's hope this is going to work out. We leave by bus at 6.30 pm. There is quite a bit of snow at the Passo Fedaio, but fortunately it's passable. The backseat of the bus, normally in use for Karel's administration and club equipment, has now been arranged as a bed for the unfortunate Laura. We drive to Cavalese via Canazei and Campitello to pick up Laura and Florian at the hospital. Laura turns out not to have broken anything, but she is in severe pain because of a number of bruised ribs. A large dose of Diclofenac has to alleviate this. And that's how we drive in the direction of the Netherlands.

SUNDAY, MARCH 15th 2015

After an extensive breakfast in Moers we arrive on the EPO terrain at 11.30 am.
