CIVETTA SKI RESORT: CHARMING and RELAXING
A fairy-tale, unspoilt landscape with small, romantic villages surrounds the ski area between Pelmo and Civetta. The Civetta ski area with the main towns of Alleghe, Selva di Cadore, Zoldo and Palafavera is situated in the heart of the Veneto Dolomites and in the South-East of Dolomiti Superski, 25 lifts and 80 km. of slopes for skiers of all levels link the three valleys.
The ski resort is surrounded by breathtaking nature and mountain scenery. Skiers can enjoy night skiing on 5 km. long slopes in Valzodana. Other ski resorts of the Dolomiti Superski area can be easily reached using the ski bus service. Very popular is the 1st World War Ski Tour, which leads to those Dolomites peaks where World War 1 was fought.

The Passo San Pellegrino
A wide alpine pass, lies at an altitude of 1918 m., about 11 km from Moena, between Trentino and the province of Belluno. The Marmolada massif is situated in the north of this pass. The San Pellegrino is surrounded with other passes: Passo Rolle, Carezza, Sella, Pordoi and Valles - is one of the nicest, vast and sunny passes in the Dolomites.
In winter it is a modern ski centre. The San Pellegrino Pass belongs to the Tre Valli Ski Centre, including also the Valles Pass ( 2031 m. ) At Pass San Pellegrino you find 64km of ski runs featuring different difficulty levels, situated between 1900 and 2500 m. A ski tour connects this area to Falcade thanks to the well-known cableway Col Margherita, that offers 100 seats and connects the pass to Col Margherita.
On the opposite slope instead, there are several ski runs with different difficulty levels. The San Pellegrino Pass is located in the "heart" of the Dolomites Skitour, the skitour "dell'Amore"

Passo di Costalunga - Passo Carezza
The original name is Carezza ( 1745 m. ), which derives from the German dialect term "KAR", or rather bowl, to indicate a concave shape between the mountains. It is about 8 km from Vigo di Fassa and extends over a wide field-like ridge set between the slopes of the Latemar Group and the far ends of the Catinaccio group of mountains. The pass enjoys a very beautiful panoramic perspective and a favourable position facing the sun.
Ski lifts, some of which are especially suitable for beginners, and many walks of varying difficulty leave from Carezza.

SKIING AROUND THE MIGHTY AND IMPOSING SELLA MASSIF AT THE HEART OF THE DOLOMITES:
Sella Ronda - this is how the most popular ski route in the Dolomites is called. This route surmounts four mountain passes and connects the Dolomite valleys of Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa. It includes about 40 km of slopes and lift facilities and can be easily be accomplished in one day, even if it requires a minimum of fitness. This route is easily accessible via Selva (Wolkenstein), Corvara, Canazei or Arabba. However, you can ski around the Sella massif clockwise (orange indications) or counter clockwise (green indications).
The experts can even add a few more kilometers to the Sella Ronda (perhaps the demanding Porta Vescovo trail from Arabba).
We recommend you to start the route before 10 am in order to ensure that you complete the route before lift facilities close. The slopes are officially closed after 5 p.m.

Vrijdag 21 februari 2014:
Het is vrijdagmiddag en als ik bij het EPO gebouw aankom zie ik de bus al staan. De chauffeurs zijn Wim Huisman en

Gijs van der Molen. Arie is er dit keer niet bij, want die is met pensioen gegaan.
Al 18 jaar ga ik met de CLUB EPO-SKI naar hotel Centrale in Alleghe bij de Civetta in de Dolomieten. Aanvankelijk met vrouw en kinderen, verleden jaar nog met één zoon, maar nu heeft iedereen het te druk en ga ik alleen. Gelukkig wel met vele bekenden.
Het schema is als vanouds: vrijdagavond vertrekken, zaterdagmiddag aankomst, zondag t/m zaterdag skiën en zaterdagavond na het diner weer terug, met een ontbijt op zondag in een restaurant in Moers.
Een groot voordeel is dat de bus met chauffeur de hele week tot onze beschikking blijft. Zo kunnen we alle skigebieden van de Dolomieten bereiken.
De prijs per persoon (bij een gedeelde 2-persoonskamer) inclusief een 7-daagse Civetta-skipas is �é� 1015,-- ( �é� 992,00 voor personen van 65j. en ouder).
Prijssupplement voor een eenpersoonskamer: �é� 125,--
Prijssupplement voor een Dolomiti Superski Pas: �é� 43,--(volwassenen), �é� 38,--(65j.) en �é� 30,--(voor kinderen jonger dan 16j).
Daarbij is inbegrepen: transport, halfpension in 3-sterren hotel Centrale, op de heenreis een diner in Moers en een ontbijt ergens in Oostenrijk; op de terugreis een ontbijt, wederom in Moers.
De organisatie is al ruim 30 jaar in handen van Karel Schuurmans, inmiddels de 65 gepasseerd, maar nog altijd even enthousiast. Een opvolger is niet te vinden, gelukkig heeft Karel beloofd dit tot zijn 90ste vol te houden.
Het is tijd om te vertrekken en na 2,5 uur komen we met onze Royal Class Bus aan in Moers voor het diner om 20.00 uur. Voldaan door de maaltijd gaan we weer op weg. Onderweg zien we vele files, maar gelukkig alleen in tegenovergestelde richting. Later is er sprake van lichte sneeuwval, maar gelukkig leidt dit niet tot oponthoud.
Zaterdag 22 februari 2014:
's Morgens 08.00 uur stoppen we voor een ontbijt in Oostenrijk. En dan gaan we over de Brennerpas Italië in. In Moena wordt chauffeur Gijs afgezet voor zijn terugtocht naar Nederland. Op de pas San Pellegrino sneeuwt het en net voor het hoogste punt ligt er een dik pak sneeuw op de weg. Een uur kwijt met het omleggen en later afstellen van de sneeuwkettingen.

Karel en Piet Vlietland zoeken een verloren sneeuwketting en vinden die ook nog. Daarna hebben we last van auto's die de weg blokkeren en komen we pas om 15.00 uur aan in Alleghe. Daar alle bagage uitgeladen en natuurlijk Karel geholpen met zijn attributen voor de aankleding van de ruimte en tafels met o.a. de EPO-skiclubvlaggetjes. Ook de bloemen niet vergeten, want eens had de chauffeur een partij bloemen in een aparte ruimte van de bus gestopt en dachten wij dat die bloemen door de plaatselijke bevolking waren meegenomen. Pas tijdens ons vertrek hebben we ze als ijsbloemen teruggevonden. Ingecheckt bij Teresina en Loris. Hun zoon Alex studeert nu, maar helpt zijn ouders in de weekends. Om 17.00 uur de ski's opgehaald bij de skiverhuur van Tullia en Olindo de Biasio, een broer van Loris.
Zondag 23 februari 2014: prachtig weer !
Deze dag blijven we in het Civetta-gebied bij Alleghe om weer vertrouwd te raken met het skiën. Iedere keer dat we hier komen blijven we ons verwonderen over de schoonheid van de bergen hier. Voor onze aankomst heeft het hier weken lang gesneeuwd. Zelfs de ruige pieken zijn ditmaal allemaal voorzien van een laag poedersneeuw.
Onder de deelnemers van dit jaar tellen we een aantal families, waaronder:
Angelique en Jan De Ronde met hun kinderen Sven en Ian;
Benedetta en Massimo Crescenti met hun zoons Matteo, Niccolo en Giorgio;
Sylvia en Martin Schuurmans met Stijn, Jill en Tess;
vader Lutz Müller-Kirsch met zijn zoons Philipp en Tilman;
Nico Booij met zoon Dion;
Jan Vollering met zoons Idwer en Frank;
Tobias Kosicki met zoon Olaf;
en Eros Capostagno met zijn dochter Fabienne.
Ik zit in een tamelijk fanatiek groepje EPO-skiers, er wordt zo intensief geskied, dat er zelfs geen tijd is voor de koffie om 11.00 uur. Het is deze zondag drukker dan we andere jaren gewend zijn, maar dat komt misschien doordat het na een lange tijd van sneeuwen eindelijk mooi weer is. Dat heeft ook consequenties voor de liften, de restaurants en de toiletten, overal lange rijen.

's Avonds krijgen we een copieus diner in Hotel Centrale. Ook de drank vloeit rijkelijk. Na het eten geeft Karel nog zijn mening over de politiek en dan wordt het toch nog laat. En eerder heeft Karel nog gedreigd, dat wie morgen niet om 08.45 uur in de bus zit, in Alleghe moet blijven. Het doel is om naar Falcade te rijden en van daaruit naar het gebied van de Passo San Pellegrino te skiën.
Maandag 24 februari 2014: weer een blauwe lucht !
In Falcade is de parkeerplaats voor de bussen niet goed aangegeven, daardoor missen we de ingang en rijden door naar de Passo Pellegrino. Met de kabelbaan van de Col Margherita gaan we naar boven. Na het drukke weekend is er nu totaal geen wachttijd. We skiën richting Falcade en drinken daar koffie op een terras, heerlijk in de zon.
Na dit zalige moment skiën we terug naar de Col Margherita om daar de zwarte piste naar het dal te nemen. Van daaruit skiën we naar de overkant van de Passo San Pellegrino en gebruiken we bij de Cima Uomo de lunch.
Tobias met zoon Olaf trekken er samen op uit. Zo ook het duo Piet Vlietland en Nico Booij. De anderen doen het wat rustiger aan. Karel maakt vele foto's, vaak hetzelfde onderwerp maar met een andere belichtingstijd. Jammer dat er een geheugen van grote capaciteit in zit en geen eindig filmrolletje. Karel blijft enthousiast aanwijzen hoe mooi het hier is. Daar kunnen en durven wij natuurlijk niets tegen in te brengen.

Jan Vollering en Eros Capostagno willen nog een keer naar boven om nogmaals de zwarte afdaling te doen. Fabienne en ik gaan dan met Karel verder, die ons een grappa belooft in een speciaal tentje. Maar door alle fotoactiviteiten komen we in tijdnood en moeten we het zonder grappa stellen, want we moeten om half vijf bij de bus zijn. Om het goed te maken krijgt iedereen in de bus prosecco, bier of frisdrank.
Om half acht genieten we wederom van een goed verzorgde maaltijd in hotel Centrale. En na de koffie spelen we "rummikub". Langzaam komen bij mij de spelregels van exact een jaar geleden weer boven. Daarna met de wifi van het hotel contact gemaakt met het thuisfront.
Morgen gaan we naar Predazzo voor het skigebied dat reikt tot Obereggen.
Dinsdag 25 februari 2014: overwegend zonnig.
We moeten extra vroeg, 08.30 uur, met de bus weg om via de Passo San Pellegrino naar het ver gelegen Ski Center Latemar bij Predazzo te gaan. Het is bekend door de skischansen die daar van de weg af te zien zijn. Maar daar aangekomen blijkt de lift wegens een technische oorzaak gesloten. Bij navraag blijkt het wintersportdorp Pampeago de enige toegang naar de pistes te zijn. Dat is te ver en we gaan naar een ander gebied: via Vigo Fasso naar de Passo Costalunga/Passo Carezza. Het begin punt is de Pra di Tori. Via de Karersee en Moseralp gaan we naar de zwarte pistes. Helemaal boven nemen we eerst koffie voordat we ons aan de afdaling wagen ( 11.45 uur ).
Na de zwarte pistes te hebben overleefd gaan we verder naar het uiteinde van dit skigebied. We slaan de lunch over en scheiden ons af van de grote groep. We gaan nu met ons drieën verder (Jan Vollering, Eros Capostagno en ik) om terug te gaan naar de zwarte pistes. Boven is er enige bewolking, maar lager is het overwegend zonnig.
Dan nemen we toch nog even koffie met een apfelstrudel, voordat we de terugtocht aanvaarden. Half vijf zijn we bij de bus, maar gaan eerst nog even naar een bar om een paar bombardino's weg te werken.

Eenmaal in de bus genieten we van de prachtige tocht terug over de Passo San Pellegrino. Morgen blijft de bus op zijn plaats en daarom slepen we na aankomst de ski's, stokken en schoenen naar de skikelder van ons hotel.
Woensdag 26 februari 2014:
Vandaag rijdt de bus niet uit en de lijnbus nemen naar Malga Ciapela heeft geen zin, want de verbinding tussen de Marmolada en de Sella Ronda is er niet doordat een paar masten van de skilift door een lawine zijn omgetrokken. Ook de Passo Giau blijkt niet toegankelijk en de Passo Fedaia is gesloten.
Daarom blijven we in het gebied van de Civetta. Het is bewolkt met af en toe zon. Ik ski vandaag met Jan Vollering. Vanwege beginnende sneeuwval besluiten we al voor vieren het bospad terug naar Alleghe te nemen. Dat pad is als blauw aangegeven, maar het kost ons toch veel inspanning door alle "polenta bückels". Omdat we ons vandaag geen tijd hebben gegund voor de lunch, nemen we nu maar een "vin brulez" (glühwein) met een "apfelstrudl".
Om 18.00 uur is het tijd voor de bingo. Een jarenlange traditie, die we na zovele jaren niet meer willen missen. Karel heeft de prijzen zelfs vanuit Spanje meegebracht.

Morgen moeten we vroeg uit de veren, want de bus gaat dan naar Arabba.
Donderdag 27 februari 2014:
Om 08.30 uur vertrekken we naar Arabba. Vandaaruit zijn er twee mogelijkheden naar boven, de cabines of de grote gondel.
Piet Vlietland, Nico Booij, Jan Vollering en Dion Booij willen de Sella Ronda gaan doen. Ze hebben brood en drank meegenomen voor onderweg. Frank Vollering en ik hebben voor de cabines gekozen en gaan alvast vooruit. Maar na een tijd boven te hebben gewacht zien we niemand van onze groep. Dan maar de zwarte piste naar beneden om nu de gondel te nemen.

We skiën met ons tweeën, we zijn de groep nu echt kwijt. Gelukkig is het weer goed, zelfs beter dan gisteren, dit tegen de verwachting in. Als we trek in koffie krijgen zoeken we een restaurant op. En wat schetst onze verbazing ? Daar aangekomen zien we onze groep op het terras zitten, lekker languit in het zonnetje.
Maar na de koffie vindt Eros dat de rust nu wel lang genoeg heeft geduurd, en vraagt ons, of we er met zijn drieën op uit kunnen trekken om de Sella Ronda te doen. Dat was eigenlijk niet de bedoeling en we vragen ons af of we daar wel tijd voor hebben.
Volgens Karel moet dat lukken, en dan gaan we maar. We volgen de oranje borden en doen de Sella Ronda met de wijzers van de klok mee.
We zijn bang dat we niet op tijd terug zullen zijn en durven nauwelijks ergens te rusten, laat staan te eten. Onderweg is het drukker dan we gewend zijn, maar de Sella Ronda is dan ook erg populair. We zien hier veel Nederlanders en plots komen we ook Tobias met zijn groepje tegen. Zij doen de Sella Ronda in tegenovergestelde richting. Volgens Tobias zijn we halverwege. Maar we zijn bang dat hij te optimistisch is en durven nog geen rust te nemen.
Dan is er eindelijk een kaart van het gebied te zien en het blijkt dat we al heel dicht bij ons beginpunt Arabba zijn. We hebben ons voor niets zorgen gemaakt.
De zon is nu weg en de "bückels" zijn moeilijk te zien, maar wel goed te voelen. Om half vier zijn we al op het eindpunt. Eros wil nog door, maar Frank en ik besluiten om bij Mr. X, bekend van de uistekende spaghetti carbonara, onze beloning te nemen en daar op hem te wachten.
Eros heeft in zijn eentje een zwarte piste genomen en is blij dat hij het er heelhuids van af heeft gebracht en trakteert ons daarom op nog een drankje. Bij ons terras is de prijsuitreiking voor een slalom. De kleintjes met snowboards zijn het eerst aan de beurt. Niet ouder dan 3 jaar zijn ze. De trotse ouders nemen de bekers in ontvangst, maar de kleintjes zijn te moe om blij te kunnen zijn en willen gedragen worden om naar bed te mogen. We wachten de rest van de prijzen niet af en gaan naar de bus.
Daar horen we dat Piet, Nico, Jan V. en Eda Emirdag de Sella Ronda links- en rechtsom hebben gedaan, en dat ze zelfs geen tijd hebben gehad om hun meegebrachte lunch te verorberen. Sebastian Hanigk is met Tobias en Olaf op pad gegaan, zij hebben hun km-quotum van deze dag weer gehaald. De rest zit ergens in een bar.
Om vijf uur is iedereen bij de bus en vertrekken we naar ons hotel. Daar zal om 19.00 uur een drankje worden aangeboden, gevolgd door een diner bij kaarslicht.
Het smaakt ons allemaal opperbest, ook de speciale wijn die we hebben besteld (Montigli 2010, �é� 25,-- ). Daarna pijnigen we onze hersenen met de rummikub van Tobias. De avond sluiten we af met een grappa om de volgende dag in vorm te zijn voor de slalom.
Vrijdag 28 februari 2014:
De slalom wordt om 11.00 uur gehouden op de Piani di Pezé.
Er zijn 3 categorieën en is alleen voor skiers. Daarom huurt Frank Vollering, de enige snowboarder op deze reis, voor deze gelegenheid een paar ski's.
's-Middags blijven we in het gebied en we zoeken zoveel mogelijk de zonnige pistes op. Steeds dreigen echter donkere wolken, maar gelukkig drijven ze over. Eenmaal beneden zien we velen van ons terug bij de ingang van de lift voor de gratis "vin brulez" ( hier een witte variant van glühwein ) en een soort cakebrood met rozijnen in de vorm van een kerststol.
Na het diner reikt Karel de oorkondes uit voor de slalom, elke oorkonde voorzien van de benodigde tijd, en laat de volgende mensen naar voren komen voor de ereplaatsen:

Daarna mogen we de traditionele, spetterende en oorverdovende vuurwerkshow van Karel aanschouwen aan de rand van het meer. Hij wordt bijgestaan door Piet Vlietland. Ook dit jaar geen politie te zien die ons vanwege lawinegevaar of bosbrand probeert tegen te houden.
Zaterdag 1 maart 2014: 's-middags sneeuw !
Om 10.00 uur moeten de kamers leeg zijn. De bagage wordt in de feestruimte van de kelder gestald. De liefhebbers kunnen de laatste dag nog skiën en na afloop douchen in de saunaruimte.
We eten dit keer vroeg, dat wil zeggen om 17.00 uur. Buiten sneeuwt het heftig. Mijn gedachten gaan terug naar enige jaren geleden, toen we op onze terugreis vast kwamen te zitten op de Passo Fedaia en we ruim 2 uren in een koude refugio moesten doorbrengen, voordat de brandweer ons verder op weg kon helpen.
En het gaat maar door met sneeuwen. Om zo kort mogelijk bloot te staan aan de steeds erger wordende sneeuwval heeft Karel een speciale techniek bedacht om onze bagage zo snel mogelijk over te brengen naar de bus aan de overkant van de weg. Gevraagd wordt om Karel te helpen met de bagage van de EPO-SKI club. Die lijkt wel meer dan die we een week geleden hebben uitgeladen. Vooral meer flessen met alcohol. Er komt geen eind aan. Intussen staat er een Tsjech met een dikke witte SUV zich hevig op te winden, dat hij er niet uit kan, doordat onze bus de uitgang blokkeert. Maar wij hebben geen tijd te verliezen en gaan door met het inladen. De Tsjech begint nog harder te claxonneren. De technische commissie, Piet en Nico, begint zich ermee te bemoeien en begeleidt de nu heel woedende man via een smalle opening, naar de vrijheid. Het lukt, maar van enige dankbaarheid is geen sprake.
Om half zeven (18.30 uur) vertrekken we, nagezwaaid door Teresina. Dat was het dan, tenminste, dat denken we, want Karel heeft nog een verrassing voor ons in petto.
Het begint ermee, dat na een half uur rijden de sneeuwkettingen moeten worden omgelegd. Drie kwartier later kunnen we verder rijden en gaan we de Passo San Pellegrino op, maar kunnen daar niet sneller dan 15 km/u. Na weer een half uur is de weg versperd. Een Hongaarse bus kan geen kant meer uit vanwege ijs onder de sneeuw.
"Een catastrofe", zegt de Hongaarse chauffeur. Wim probeert er nog langs te komen, maar moet de poging opgeven als onze bus te erg begint te kwispelen.
Een sneeuwketting heeft het begeven. Dan maar weer achteruit en afwachten. Na een kwartier komt er een sneeuwschuiver naar boven, maar die kan niet om ons heen. De bestuurder van de sneeuwschuiver adviseert Wim de pas achteruitrijdend te verlaten, tenminste, als hij dat aandurft, want de bochten zijn scherp en de weg is smal. En als dat zou lukken, dan een andere route te nemen: via de Col de Valles/Passo Valles.
Maar eerst moet er een nieuwe sneeuwketting worden omgelegd. Dus Wim doet moedig zijn regenpak en handschoenen aan. Het is hard werken onder deze omstandigheden. Daarna besluit hij de bergpas achterwaarts te verlaten. Dat zijn spannende momenten voor ons, maar Wim geeft geen krimp en doet alsof het zijn dagelijks werk is. Onze complimenten !
Daarna moet hij een plek zien te vinden om de bus te keren. Da lukt en we gaan nu de Col de Valles op. Maar ook daar ligt de sneeuw behoorlijk hoog en is het berijdbare deel smal. Gelukkig hebben we maar weinig tegenliggers. Die moeten we heel voorzichtig zien te passeren. Karel merkt op dat hij in de afgelopen 30 jaar al heel veel heeft meegemaakt, maar zo erg als nu heeft hij het nog nooit gezien.
Dan na 2,5 uur vertraging halen we in Predazzo de inmiddels behoorlijk ongeduldig geworden 2de chauffeur op: Gijs.
Na een uur zijn we uit de bergen en mag Gijs het stuur overnemen. De autowegen worden in ras tempo genomen, maar wij mogen slapen en doen dat dan ook.
Zondag 2 maart 2014: zonnig
Door de vertraging zijn we wat later aan het ontbijt, 10.15 uur in Moers, en ook wat later op het EPO-terrein: 14.00 uur.
Conclusies:
- Het was een heftige terugreis maar we hadden chauffeurs die goed op hun taak berekend zijn en die ons veilig hebben thuisgebracht.
- Het is een heerlijke week geweest met goed tot heel goed weer. De sneeuw was dit jaar perfect, ook een halve meter minder hadden we niet gemerkt.
- De omgeving van de Dolomieten is schitterend en er is hier nog ruimte om te skiën, soms hadden we de pistes geheel voor onszelf.
- Geen ongelukken met onze deelnemers; niemand van ons is in het ziekenhuis beland en niemand heeft zelfs maar een verkoudheidje opgelopen.
- Er was voor elk wat wils: lekker lui, of fijn fanatiek.
- En het was gezellig. Het voordeel van reizen met de EPO-Skiclub is dat er altijd sprake is van een gemêleerd gezelschap: gezinnen, vaders met zoons of dochters, vrienden en vriendinnen, en ook alleengaanden, zodat er altijd voor iedereen aansluiting is te vinden.
- Alles was door Karel als vanouds perfect georganiseerd. Niet voor niets staat EPO in "CLUB EPO-SKI"voor Everything Perfectly Organised.
Kortom, volgend jaar weer !!

Friday, February 21st
It's Friday afternoon and as I arrive at the EPO building I can already see the bus. Our drivers are Wim Huisman and Gijs van der Molen. Arie isn't there this time, because he retired. For the past 18 years I've been going to the Hotel Centrale in Alleghe near the Civetta in the Dolomites with Club EPO-SKI. Initially with wife and children, last year with just one son, but now everyone is busy and I go by myself. Fortunately however with many acquaintances. The outline is as always: Leaving Friday evening, arriving Saturday afternoon, skiing Sunday to Saturday, returning after dinner with breakfast on Sunday in a restaurant in Moers. A great advantage is that the bus and driver stay at our disposal for the whole week. This way we can reach all the skiing areas of the Dolomites.
The price per person (sharing a double room) inclusive of a 7-day Civetta- ski pass is �é� 1015.- ( �é�992.- for people over 65).
The price supplement for a single room is �é� 125.-
The price supplement for a Dolomite Super ski-pass is �é� 43.- (adults), �é� 38.- for >65 years old and �é� 30.- (for children younger than 16 years old).
Included in the price is: transport, half board in 3* Hotel Centrale, dinner in Moers on the way there and breakfast somewhere in Austria and on the way back breakfast, again in Moers.
For 30 years the organization has been in the hands of Karel Schuurmans, by now passed 65, but still as enthusiastic as ever. A successor can't be found, so fortunately Karel has promised to keep doing this till he's 90.
It's time to leave and after 2½ hours our Royal Class Bus arrives in Moers for dinner at 20.00 hours. Replete by the meal we're on our way again. We see a lot of traffic jams along the way, but fortunately only in the opposite direction. Later there is some light snow, but fortunately this doesn't delay us.
Saturday, February 22nd
At 08.00 we stop for breakfast in Austria. And then we enter Italy through the Brenner Pass . In Moena driver Gijs is dropped off for his return trip to Holland.
It's snowing on the San Pellegrino Pass and just before the highest point there is a huge load of snow in the road. We loose an hour with attaching, and later adjusting, the snow chains. Karel and Piet Vlietland are looking for a lost snow chain and find it too! After that we are delayed by cars blocking the road and we only arrive in Alleghe at 15.00 hours. There all the luggage is unloaded and of course we help Karel with his attributes for the decoration of the place and tables with amongst other things the little EPO-Ski club flags. Also the flowers haven't been forgotten. One year the driver had put a lot of flowers in a separate compartment in the bus and we thought they'd been taken by the locals. Only when we were leaving did we find them as ice flowers.
We check in with Teresina and Loris. Their son Alex is a student now, but helps his parents at the weekends. Picked up the skis at Tullia and Olindo de Biasio's ski hire, Loris's brother. Sunday,
February 23rd, beautiful weather

Today we're staying in the Civetta area near Alleghe to get used to the skiing again. Every time we come here we're amazed by the beauty of the mountains here. In the weeks before our arrival it's been snowing all the time. Even the rough peaks are covered in powder snow this time.
Amongst the participants this year are a number of families, amongst whom: Angelique and Jan de Ronde with their children Sven and Ian; Benedetta and Massimo Crescenti and their sons Matteo, Niccolo and Giorgio; Sylvia and Martin Schuurmans with Stijn, Jill and Tess; father Lutz Müller-Kirsch and his sons Philipp and Tilman; Nico Booij with son Dion; Jan Vollering with sons Idwer and Frank; Tobias Kosicki and son Olaf and Eros Capostagno with his daughter Fabienne.
I am part of a rather fanatical group of EPO skiers. The skiing is so intense that there isn't even time for coffee at 11.00. This Sunday it's busier than we've been used to in other years, but that's possibly because it's finally good weather after all the snowfall. That also has an impact on the lifts, restaurants and toilets: long queues everywhere.
In the evening we have a copious meal in Hotel Centrale. The drinks also flow freely. After dinner Karel conveys his opinion on politics and then it gets late after all. And that while earlier Karel had threatened that anyone not in the bus by 08.45 the following morning would have to stay in Alleghe. The goal is to drive to Falcade and to ski to the San Pellegrino area from there.
Monday, February 24th, blue sky once again.
Because the parking area for busses isn't indicated properly in Falcade we miss the entrance and drive on to Passo Pellegrino. We take the cablecar of the Col Margherita to go up. After the busy weekend, there is now no waiting time whatsoever. We ski in the direction of Falcade and have coffee there in wonderful sunshine.
After this blissful moment we ski back to the Col Margherita in order to take the black run back to the valley. From there we ski to the other side of the Passo Pellegrino and have lunch at the Cima Uomo. Tobias with son Olaf take off together. As do the twosome Piet Vlietland and Nico Booij. The others take it more easily. Karel takes many pictures, often the same subject but with a different exposure. It's a pity the memory hasn't got a large capacity and there isn't a finite film roll. Karel keeps pointing out enthusiastically how beautiful it is here. We of course can't and daren't oppose him.
Jan Vollering and Eros Capostagno want to go back up to take the black run down once more. Fabienne and I go on with Karel, who promises us a grappa in a special place. But because of all the photo activities we're running out of time, so we have to do without the grappa, because we have to be back at the bus by 16.30. To make up for it everybody in the bus gets Prosecco, beer or a soft drink.
At 19.30 we enjoy another well prepared meal in Hotel Centrale. And after coffee we play "Rummikub". Gradually the rules from a year ago come back to me. Then, with the hotel wi-fi I make contact with the home front.
Tomorrow we're going to Predazzo for the skiing area which reaches to Obereggen.
Tuesday, February 25th, mostly sunny
We have to leave particularly early, 08.30, by bus to reach the far off Ski Center Latemar via de Passo Pellegrino. It's well known for the ski jumps which you can see from the road. But having arrived there it turns out that the lift is closed for technical reasons. After inquiring it seems that the winter sports village of Pampeago is the only entrance to the pistes. That's too far and we go to another area: Vigo Fasso. The starting point is Pra di Tori. Via the Karersee and Moseralp we go to the black runs. Right at the top we first have coffee before attempting the run down (11.45).
After having survived the black runs we go on to the extremity of this ski area. We skip lunch and separate from the large group. Three of us continue (Jan V., Eros C. and I) to go back to the black runs. At the top there is some cloud, but further down it's mostly sunny.
We can't resist having a coffee and apfelstrudel, before we set out on the return trip. At 16.30 we arrive at the bus, but first we visit a bar to down a few Bombardinos.
Once on board the bus we enjoy the beautiful trip back across the Passo Pellegrino. Tomorrow the bus will stay put and so, on arrival, we carry skis, sticks and boots to the ski cellar of our hotel.
Wednesday, February 26th
Today the bus isn't used and taking the local bus to Malga Ciapela is pointless, because there is no connection between Marmolada and the Sella Ronda, because a couple of ski lift masts have been pulled down by an avalanche. Also the Passo Giau turns out to be unapproachable and the Passo Fedaia is closed.
That's why we stay in the Civetta area. It's cloudy with occasional sunshine. Today I'm skiing with Jan Vollering. Because of beginning snowfall we decide, even before 16.00, to take the run back to Alleghe through the woods, but it takes a lot of effort because of all the "polenta bückels". Because we didn't allow ourselves any time for lunch, we now decide to have a "vin brulez" (glühwein) with "apfelstrudl".
At 18.00 it is time for the Bingo. A long standing tradition that we wouldn't want to do without after all these years. Karel even brought prizes from Spain.
Tomorrow we have to get up early, because then the bus goes to Arabba.
Thursday, February 27th
We leave for Arabba at 08.30. From there there are two possibilities to go up, the covered ski lifts or the large gondola.
Piet, Nico, Jan V. and Dion want to do the Sella Ronda. They've taken sandwiches and drinks for along the way. Frank and I have chosen for the covered ski lifts and go on ahead. But having waited at the top for some time we see no one of our group. So we decide to take the black run down in order to take the gondola.
We ski together and have really lost the group now. Fortunately the weather is good, even better than yesterday, against all expectation. When we start to feel like a coffee we find a restaurant. And guess what?! On arrival we see our group on the terrace, stretched out in the sunshine.
But after coffee Eros thinks that the idleness has taken long enough and asks us if we could take off the three of us to do the Sella Ronda. That wasn't really our intention and we wonder if we have enough time. But Karel reckons it should be alright and off we go. We follow the orange signs and ski the Sella Ronda clockwise.
We're afraid we won't be back in time and hardly dare rest anywhere, let alone eat something. Along the way it's busier than we're used to, but the Sella Ronda is after all very popular. We see a lot of Dutch people and all of a sudden we also bump into Tobias and his little group. They are doing the Sella Ronda in the opposite direction. According to Tobias we are half way. But we are worried he's too optimistic and daren't have a rest. Finally we see a map of the area and it turns out we are quite close to our starting point of Arabba. We worried for nothing.
The sun has now gone in and the "bückels" are difficult to see, but you feel them all the more. Already at 15.30 we are at the finish. Eros wants to go on, but Frank and I decide to get our reward at Mr. X, well known for the excellent Spaghetti Carbonara, and wait for him there.
Eros took a black run down all by himself and is glad he made it in one piece. He therefore treats us to another drink. Near our terrace is the prize giving ceremony for a slalom. The little ones with snowboards are up first. They're no older than 3. The proud parents receive the trophies, but the little ones are too tired to be happy and want to be carried to be allowed to go to bed. We don't wait for the other prizes and go to the bus. There we hear that Piet, Nico, Jan V. and Eda Emirdag did the Sella Ronda in both directions and that they didn't even have time to eat their packed lunch. Sebastian Hanigk has been en route with Olaf. They reached their kilometer quota for the day again. The rest is somewhere in a bar.
At 17.00 everybody is at the bus and we leave for our hotel. At 19.00 we'll get a complementary drink followed by a candlelight dinner.
It tastes superb, also the special wine we ordered (Montigli 2010, �é� 25.-)
Afterwards we wreck our brains over Tobias' Rummikub. We finish the evening with a grappa in order to be in shape for the slalom the next day.
Friday, February 28th
The slalom takes place at 11.00 at the Piani di Pezé. There are three categories and solely for skiers. Frank Vollering, the only snowboarder on this trip, therefore rents a pair of skis. In the afternoon we stay in the area and seek out the sunny pistes as much as possible. Dark clouds are threatening, but fortunately they drift away.
Once down we see many of us back at the entrance to the lift for the free "vin brulez" (here a white variety of glühwein) and a sort of cake bread with raisins in the shape of a Christmas loaf. After dinner Karel awards the certificates for the slalom, each certificate showing the time scored and invites the following people to come forward for the places of honour:

After that we can watch Karel's traditional, spectacular and ear splitting firework show at the edge of the lake. His assistant is Piet Vlietland. Also this year not a policeman to be seen who tries and stops us because of a danger of avalanches or forest fire.
Saturday, March 1st, snow in the afternoon
At 10.00 the rooms have to be vacated. The luggage is stored in the party room of the cellar. Enthusiasts can still ski on this last day and shower afterwards in the sauna room.
We have dinner early this time, that is to say 17.00. Outside it's snowing heavily. My thoughts return to some years ago when we got stuck on our way back on the Passo Fedaia and we had to spend more than 2 hours in a cold refugio, before the fire brigade could help us on our way.
And it keeps on snowing. In order to reduce the time of exposure to the ever increasing snowfall, Karel comes up with a special technique to take our luggage as quickly as possible to the bus on the other side of the road. We are asked to help Karel with the EPO-club luggage. It seems much more than what we unloaded a week ago. Especially more bottles containing alcohol. There's no end to it. Meanwhile there is a Czech with a great big white SUV getting seriously agitated because he can't get out since our bus is blocking the exit. But we haven't got any time to loose and continue loading. The Czech sounds his horn even louder. The technical committee gets involved and guides the man, who is furious by now, to freedom via a very small opening. It works, but there is not a single sign of gratitude.
At 18.30 we depart, waved goodbye by Teresina. That was that then, or at least that's what we think, because Karel has another surprise up his sleeve.

It starts with putting on the snow chains after half an hour's drive. Three quarters of an hour later we can continue and we go up the Passo Pellegrino, but can't go any faster than 15 km/hour. After another 30 minutes the road is blocked. A Hungarian bus can't move any which way because of ice under the snow. "A catastrophe", says the Hungarian driver. Wim tries to get past, but has to give up the attempt when our bus starts to slither too much. The snow chain has broken. Nothing for it but to go backwards and wait.

After 15 minutes a snow plough comes up, but it can't get round us. The driver of the snow plough advises Wim to leave the pass backwards, at least if he has the courage, because the bends are sharp and the road is narrow. If he was to succeed we should then take a different route via the Col de Valles.
But first a new snow chain has to be put on. So Wim bravely puts on his rain suit and gloves. It's hard work under these conditions. Then he decides to leave the mountain pass backwards. These are nerve wrecking moments for us, but Wim holds out splendidly and pretends this is every day work. Our compliments!

Then he needs to find a place to turn the bus around. He manages it and we now go up the Col de Valles. But there also the snow is piled up high and the part that can be driven on is narrow. Fortunately there is not a lot of traffic coming the other way. We have to try and pass them very carefully. Karel remarks he's seen a lot in the past 30 years, but he's never seen it as bad as this.
Then, after 2½ hours delay we pick up the 2nd driver Gijs, who by now is pretty impatient, in Predazzo. After an hour we have left the mountains behind and Gijs can take over the steering wheel. The motorways are driven at a steady, fast speed, but we're allowed to sleep and that's what we do.
Sunday, March 2nd, sunny
Because of the delay we get to breakfast a little later, 10.15 in Moers. And also later at the EPO site:14.00
Conclusions:
- It was a heavy duty return trip, but we had drivers who were well prepared for their job and brought us home safely.
- It's been a wonderful week with good to very good weather. The snow was perfect this year. We wouldn't have noticed half a meter less.
- The surroundings of the Dolomites is fabulous and there is still room to ski here. Sometimes we even had the pistes to ourselves.
- No accidents with any of our participants; nobody ended up in hospital, nobody even caught a cold.
- There was something for everyone: nice and relaxed or lovely and fanatic
- And it was "gezellig". The advantage of travelling with the EPO-ski club is that there is always mixed company: families, fathers with sons or daughters, friends and also singles so that there is always a connection somewhere.
- As of old everything had been perfectly organized by Karel. It's not for nothing that EPO, as in "CLUB EPO-SKI" stands for Everything Perfectly Organized.
In short, same again next year!
